in Phi Mai we pay THB250 plus transport too and from work and food and drink - people happy for this - but then again they all seem to be related in some way.

Cheers

Also the job type and if it is group job has to b taken into account. Thais well work for much less if the job is a big outing plus picnic affair.

Over the last few days they have been putting in a storm drain in the Soi. Now the local Government has supplied the pipes etc and given one of the residents money to install it. He family and friends have been digging laughing and eating for the last few days. Pay less than 100 Bah a day.

When it's fun it's not work Jim

Interesting experience couple of months ago I decided to put in 12 rai of cassava so I ploughed and put in my ridges and asked around for labour for planting 160 bt a day was agreed and half a dozen women showed first thing the next morning

So off to the fields oh no I was informed that the price had risen to 300 bt a day Why was this because the previous night they had found out that the farang down the road had hired for 300 bt a few weeks ago so now the rate was 300 I tried my best to explain that just because he or as it turned out his wife was willing to pay nearly double the average there was no way I would they wouldn't back down so I fired them all off and I went to the next village and got my labour there 150 bt per day !!

You fired them but they never actually worked for you?

"When it's fun it's not work". Reminds me of the same expression of a thai lady in the entertainement-business about 2 years ago in Pattaya. How ironic, had a good laugh when I read this exact quote again here. As the world turns. Cheers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not Isaan but Amphur Mae Wong, Nakhon Sawan: We pay whatever the prevailing average for the village is, currently Bt200. Actually, we pay Bt25 per hour. We don’t automatically include F&B but usually contribute as do they themselves.

We find that the labourers are more motivated by the group dynamics (including the crop owner) rather than the amount of pay…they even put in a couple of extra hours for free sometimes but they know that my wife helps them in other ways too. Our team (all are farm owners too) are not inclined to work for certain other farmers (only Thais in my village) who don’t show them sufficient respect, regardless of higher rates offered.

My village is comprised of central Thais who have moved from various provinces in lower north Thailand; my team are all Isaan people from the adjoining village, which is comprised wholly of Thais from various provinces in Isaan. We much prefer Isaan people…to work with and to socialise with.
