I arrived in Bangkok on the 25th July with my Thai wife, and our 7 month old child (Aust passport). We do not fly out until 28th August which is 5 days after the visa on arrival expires.

What would be the best option for my son and I to do. Extend visa in Bangkok or just pay the fine at the airport. Costs involved and any consequences of the later?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The best option is always stay legal get the extension.

The other option will cost 500 THB a day for the overstay, unless of course you are stopped or checked beforehand by the police when the situation will then become more serious.

You have a visa exempt entry, not a visa on arrival. An extension would cost 1,900 baht, the overstay fine 2500 baht. For the child there is no overstay fine. it might be a lttle more work, but would keep all things legal to ask for the extension.

Get the child a Thai passport next time, makes it easier.

Thanks for the advice.

Would you suggest just getting the extension for myself and not my son? Considering there is no fine for him what would be the point? We are going to add him to my wife's families house registration at the local amphur.

Yes you can obtain alone. It will be 7 days allowed to depart. Or you could just take a border crossing for a new 15 day visa exempt entry. In most cases that would be about the same cost.
