[Myanmar] Buddhists Protest Quintana’S Arakan Visit

Around 100 Buddhists staged a peaceful protest in the northern Arakan State town of of Maungdaw on Tuesday during a visit to the area by UN rights envoy Tomas Ojea Quintana, according to the Voice of America. The protesters demanded that the UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, give equal treatment to both Muslims and Buddhists. Many Buddhists say the agency is biased because most of its local staff are Muslims. Meanwhile, at a press conference in Rangoon on Monday, Burma’s government said that seven people had been arrested in connection with violence in June, including five from the UNHCR.
