Methinks a key from back to front would make a better impression; knocking the mirror, what a jokeblink.png

I found it shocking that the guy did it on purpose (or is a real bad driver). Keying.. that is just mean. No way would anyone be that bad.

Alot of those motorbike riders depend on that bike for a living. That's why they rule the streets of Bangkok.Your a$$ in a "private" vehicle does nothing more than take up room, and impede commerce.

Nice trolling attempt.

It certainly wasn't on purpose, but I was driving back from Cha-am on day, going at about 100 kph. My friend was driving in back of me. Two cars were overtaking us, so basically, there were four cars in formation driving up the road.

I heard a loud bang and saw a motorcyclist zipping between the car next to me and me. He went almost out of control as he squeezed through, then actually went off the road and down an embankment to a crossroad running under the highway bridge. He somehow managed to stay upright and continued on, this time on the other road.

I stopped my car, and I had a long dent where he hit me. My friend, who is Thai, stopped as well. What surprised me is that when I mentioned i was surprised the guy was alive, he told me that if he had died or been hurt, I would have been considered at fault as I was in a car, even if I was doing nothing wrong.

I drive a car and ride just the usual 115 cc moped. I never observe myself and the other mopeds slowing down traffic as we take off at the front of the lights. As someone else said we've sped off and gotten out of the way of the cars before they can even begin to accelerate. I see it as a positive for the cars that we don't "wait our turn". That would be the most inconvenient thing for both the bikes and the cars.

I have driven cars and ridden bikes in Bangkok for over half my life.

If bikes get to the front of trafice cues good on 'em. If they then spread out over all lanes available and do little more than 20kmh , a pox on them.

If a car uses any or all of his lane, thats his right. If I'm on a bike and cant get through I don't have a right to share someone elses lane.

If I am indicating turning right in my car and a bike tries wizz passed me on the out side he is a moron.

If a car suddenly moves lanes withouth indicating into the path of a bike then he is a moron.

We all get it wrong sometimes , I apologize when I'm wrong. If someone else is wrong I throw a fit , if they apologize I accept gracefully (gracefully maybe streching it after thowing a fit)

Cars don't own the roads and neither do bikes. Riders get hurt a lot more in accidents than drivers.

If I ever caught a rider deliberately damaging my car because of how I'd decided to position my car in my lane , I'd take every chance to drive them off the road at the next opportunity.

This is what I've been told by several Thais. After posting it on here I've been told it's a myth by people who have contested it.

I have seen bikes with metal end caps on the handles and one of them did a mean scrap on my paint job by squeezing between cars. Really damaged the paint. I couldn't catch the bastard in time.

First, all car mirrors are made to pop or bend if touched in Thailand (what about in other countries?cheesy.gif ).

Second, most motorcycle mirrors are mounted to the handlebars of a bike, so hitting you could cause the bars to move and cause an accident.

Wrong on both counts,

1).ALL cars do NOT have spring loaded mirrors i.e. Many have electric self folding mirrors precisely for the reason of NOT getting damaged plus giving people more space to pass and if these are hit they even slightly often damage the gears inside(many of which are only plastic). As are the covers of the mirrors these days and a small knock from the left solid handle bar of a bike can easily damage it badly).

2).Motor cycle mirrors are mounted on a flimsy rotatable spindle (to allow for easy alignment) that gets easily misaligned by knocks but NONE I have ever seen would allow the handle bars to move by a direct strike only on the mirror

Also most mirrors are INSIDE the size of the handle bars NOT outside, so any knock on the mirrors by anything but the cars mirrors i.e. the cars body work would usually cause the bars to move as well

I have seen many times where the little sh#ts are riding up the line of traffic and deliberately clip the mirrors on quite a few and also twice seen some young falangs on motorcoss bikes do the same on soi siam country club road and soi nurn plab wahn(Soi Muslim).

as a regular mountain bike cyclist it is not the car mirrors that bother me, my bars are high enough to clear most but the rich guys/girls in the big 4X4s that are a pain both with the mirrors and the running boards that stick outside the line of the vehicle tends to <deleted> with the pedalingw00t.gif

Mirrors and checking through windows before manouvering seems to be something most car drivers don't do and looking before pulling away or going into a side road is something most motor cyclists here don't bother with.

only my observations

I am sitting slightly on the motorbike side of the fence here. I ride a motorbike, so I tend to see this side better in Bangkok. However I was trained to drive a car in England (that still has one of the more severe driving tests in the world) and have been taught to be "Rider Aware".

As a standard in Thailand we are blessed with people that ARE naturally "Rider Aware" because they are, or have been, riders too. As always there are some selfish people and some people simply not being entirely aware. I have had to remonstrate with a 4x4 driver once as he nearly clipped me in moving traffic. I was shocked as most Thai drivers are aware of the path of motorbikes, but this one seemed oblivious. As the traffic slowed I pulled up next to him to see him tucking into a bowl of noodles!!! I did not let that one lie. Quite a lot of rampant gesticulation and some straight ahead "I'm not looking at madman I just cut up" staring later and I moved on.....feeling like I'd wasted my time.

Anyway, back to my point. Though I fall on the side of the motorbike here I want to express a point to our motorcyclist friends. It is OUR responsibility to plan WELL ahead on our motorbikes. As any experienced motorcyclist knows planning ahead is what buys you the time to respond and avoid accidents by finding spaces in traffic that buy you time to respond. When approaching slowing traffic you should be looking ahead at car positioning to work out where you will enter the "tunnel". Once in you should continue to look for the spaces between car roofs. This is the advantage of being higher up (this is why riding upright in the city is the safest position) is that we can plan more efficiently. Doing this SHOULD allow us to avoid these narrow gaps. Even when doing this we should remember that we WILL come to a halt at some times. If you counted those times and compared it to the times when you made it through unhindered I think you would find the space to calm down. Again, experienced riders know that riding aggressively will only end up badly and, being on a motorbike, they will be the ones to suffer most.

Even then, when presented with a narrow gap if you slow right down and use your feet you might well find that you can maneuver the bike around the mirrors. I have found when doing this that many people will bring their electronic mirrors in for you or shuffle forward that few inches that makes a larger gap for you to pass.

This doesn't stop those rare individuals who DO (there is plenty of evidence on here to support this) actively block you. To all those car drivers that practice this can I ask what makes you my private policeman?

This was the first time i ever seen it too. I was driving behind a group of motorbikes (kinda like a train) going past cars. Quite easy as there was room enough. But twice i saw the guy clip a car that was lined wrong (probably on purpouse as there was no way to go for the car). I mean once i can understand as a mistake or so but twice makes it on purpouse in my mind.

I prefer to ride my bike when i know i need to go through heavy traffic else i take the car but first option is to go on times that it is not busy at all.

If some assho*e is blocking motorbike paths with his car, then I say he deserves to get his mirror knocked!

If I order a pizza, I want it to arrive at my house ASAP. Anything that helps the motorbike delivery guys sounds good to me. Anyone who stands in the way of me getting my delivery food quickly can f*&k themselves.

On another note, Isn't delivery here in Thailand fast as hell! I don't think I've ever waited more than 25 minutes from the moment I put the phone down.

Sometimes it's literally been about 15 minutes from Pizza Company (Pizza Hut Sucks)

I ride a bike, drive a car and eat pizza in BKK so can see all sides. As for bikes getting to the front of the lights and then holding up cars .... I've never seen this. If you stand on the BTS walkway over the lights at Central World you can see all the bikes streaming past after the lights change, then a big gap .... then the first of the cars. The lights are on red so long I think most drivers have slipped into neutral/park (mentally and using the shift) so they are always well behind the bikes.

On the other hand I don't believe that (most) car drivers are deliberately blocking the bikes. In most cases they are planning to change lanes when the traffic starts moving and they have just moved out of line too soon. My bike is a bit wider than most scooters and I've often seen these drivers move out of my way when they realise I can't get though.

We're all just trying to make the most of the endless traffic jams and get home for our pizza.

As a side note - I accidentally clipped a car mirror when driving a hire car (truck) that was wider than my own car. Four Thai guys jumped out of the car and came up to my truck. I expected trouble and stepped out and apologised (in Thai). Their manner changed immediately and the driver said 'mai pen rai' and they all jumped back in the car and drove off. A smile and an apology still goes a long way in Thailand.

Shouldn't the motocy be waiting in the traffic queue with the other vehicles and not be weaving to the front.

It always annoys me that they block the lane in front of me when I am accelerating away from the lights faster.

If the motorbike has the opportunity to scratch your car, then you are not doing a good enough job of blocking. ;)

I believe that no drivers (with the exception of one TV member) intentionally blocks any motorbikes. If a car sits too far to the left or right of the lane thereby blocking the "tunnel", this is down to ignorance or lack of awareness.

I confess to accidentally clipping some mirrors now and again - more often than not, I would put out my hand in apology. Other times, I would pull up alongside the offending car/driver and just stare at them - it can be quite intimidating particularly if it's a lady driver and you are standing 5' 11" and riding a Versys 650.

One thing I haven't done yet but would love to do is to actually manually pull the passenger side's mirror close so that I can pass. If it's not electrically operated, it's hell of a job stretching over to the passenger side to push out the mirror again.

You made me laugh.. i consider 5'11 not tall at all im only 6ft. I would say from 6'2 or so you are starting to become intimidating.

I don't have much knowledge about a versys650 but isnt that a lot wider as a CBR250 or scooter ? Meaning you get trapped even faster ?

I am not sure its lack of awareness but could be. I have seen cars move when i pull up next to them and i always wave friendly then. I am happy i don't often travel during rush hour. Its not much fun.

Ive seen a farang guy kick someones car door for blocking the lane.

Must of been some sort of momma's boy who didn't get enough cuddles when he was a kid.

Amazed you are surprised by it - a direct result of the spoilt t little mummy's boys this country raises in such abundance.

"He's in my path delaying my by 3 seconds. For that I will break his mirror".

Seriously? I think the vast major of riders in this country are hardly what you could call "spoiled". With the exception of a few Thai posers - those who buy a litre bike as their first bike and then sell it a few months later (if they've survived) - most Thais buy a bike because that's all they can afford. (why else would they pay 10% flat rate interest? That's like paying credit card interest rates for the life of the loan)

Back to the topic though, there're both considerate and inconsiderate drivers here. All I can say is when you drive your car keep in mind you share the road with others too, if they ride a little slow or their bike is little small for your liking just remember that they're probably a little less fortunate than you are, give them a break, maybe they're just having a bad day.

Again today! Sukhumvit, usual suspect.....taxi! No, I did not imagine it. He pulled up, in traffic, 2 car's lengths short, saw me judging the gap (foot down) and closed it. There was nothing to his right except the central reservation and no motorbikes passing there. When I pulled around the car to his left and started to come back out in front of him he accelerated to close that gap. I had done nothing wrong to him. The first he would have known about me was when I was looking as I had moved through 10-20 cars in the traffic jam already and, therefore, hadn't encountered him already on my ride.

What a pathetic little man. He was going nowhere and past him was a clean gap for me to pass onwards.

Luckily, for me, I was delayed by a microsecond. He, on the other hand, was possibly still stewing it over a minute later as he continued to go nowhere. If you don't like traffic don't drive in BKK. DEFINITELY DON'T BE A TAXI DRIVER!

Happened to me today ,not the knocking of a mirror but me blocking a whole lane as I tried to change lane as I was in the wrong one .

A simple hand out the window sorry gesture and nobody seemed to mind .

That is an accident and it can happen when i drive my car it could happen to me if i am somewhere i don't know the roads well. (almost everywhere) But purpously blocking lanes is a different thing. Not to mention those selfish people who need to turn left but decide not to wait in the normal line but pass around it and there cant get in and block of an other whole lane. (not so much a problem when im on the bike but when in the car)

was room enough. But twice i saw the guy clip a car that was lined wrong (probably on purpouse as there was no way to go for the car). I mean once i can understand as a mistake or so but twice makes it on purpouse in my mind.

I am sorry but this is the very reason that I block them off, giving them noway through on the inside

By and large I think motorcyclists take far more abuse (or more accurately disregard for life, right of way, etc.) FROM car owners than the other way around.

:)

I think that most motorcyclists know the difference. When somebody moves across and gets stuck it actually opens up a larger gap round the other side of that car. Sometimes we all get stuck on our bikes, that's life. I think that one of the things that many car only users forget is that sitting still on a motorbike in the direct sun is fuffing tough and knackering. That is just to add to the fact that riding a motorbike is a physical experience in tight traffic. I come across one of these "purposeful" idiots every 20 hours that I ride. It is THAT rare.
