Grenades, AK-47 found on Bangkok bus

Bangkok, Aug 6, 2012 (AFP) - Thai police said Sunday they were looking for the owner of a bag left on a public bus in Bangkok with an AK-47 assault rifle, more than 200 bullets, 10 hand grenades and five mines inside.

The owner is thought to have fled when the bus broke down on the outskirts of the capital after developing mechanical problems near the end of its journey from northeast Thailand, the authorities said.

Police said it was unclear where the arms were destined.

"We are investigating and searching" for the owner, said Police Colonel Kamthorn Ouicharoen.

Thailand has seen a number of grenade attacks in the past linked to political violence and personal disputes, while gun and bomb attacks are common in the kingdom's insurgency-plagued deep south.

They should have kept quiet and asked the bus company to advertise that a lost bag had turned up - please call this number.

Just because they left a bad full of weapons on a bus doesn't mean they would be stupid enough to fall for tha.... oh, wait, never mind blink.png

If that didn't work, they could always offer a large cash reward for whomever claims the bag and identifies its contents.

Transport Company steps up security after grenades, AK47 found on bus

BANGKOK, Aug 6 – Thailand’s state-owned Transport Company Limited has stepped up security at Mo Chit bus terminal in northern Bangkok after a bag containing hand grenades and an AK47 assault rifle was found on an interprovincial bus which arrived at the terminal crowded with passengers returning to the capital after a long holiday weekend.

The Transport Company boosted security preparations at its terminals, particularly Mo Chit, after the arms were discovered on a bus arriving from the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima to a crowded terminal crowded with many travellers returning to Bangkok at the end of the Asanha Bucha and Khao Pansa Day holidays.

Transport Company President Wuthichart Kalyanamitra said that police found one AK47 and eight hand grenades on the bus from Nakhon Ratchasima.

He said the police received a tip and were prepared to search and seize the arms when the bus arrived at the terminal.

However, he said, the suspect was apparently aware of the police move and fled the bus before it arrived at Mo Chit 2, leaving the police holding a bag of weapons but without a suspect in custody. (MCOT online news)

Being a "long distance" bus as opposed to local, I speculate that the bag and weapon may have been in the underfloor luggage compartment. I somehow doubt that the owner was bold enough to enter the passenger area with the weapon which I believe is over a meter long?

maybe someone was planning to be at the court this week to help Jatuporn (King Kong).

Of course! Maybe they'd plant the mines in strategic locations to keep the yellowshirts away............ coffee1.gif

Who wouldn't have been there anyway if Thida hadn't called the Red Shirts in in the first place...........coffee1.gif

The AK 47 is easily broken down into halves, removing the barrel assembly from the receiver. It would be much more concealable in this configuration. An experienced operator can quickly reassemble the weapon in a matter of moments.

It has been some time since I last held one in my own hands, but the overall length of a disassembled AK would not exceed 18-24 inches, assuming that we are talking about the AKM variant, with a folding buttstock.

It's just a move to "normalise" searches and xrays of bus luggage.

Come on, get real, why would someone abandon the bag just because the bus breaks down.. it's just stupid. It's like the time someone left a bag containing millions of baht of drugs on a bus... oh yea, right.

It's no different to someone turning up on a plane with bomb in his shoe or underpants really! It's a mechanism to get us all used to the idea that we need to be searched and subjected to security.. for our own benefit of course.

Classic paranoia symptoms. LOL
