Thais abducted off Nigerian coast 'safe'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A Thai and other foreigners kidnapped by pirates who hijacked a ship over the weekend off the Nigerian coast are safe, Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said yesterday.

However, he declined to reveal any details of the incident including the names of those held, saying it was a sensitive issue and the safety of the kidnapped crewmen is a priority.

The Thai Foreign Ministry is coordinating with several agencies to help the Thai crewman, and the embassy in Abuja is in contact with the Nigerian government and the Dutchbased Sea Trucks Group (STG), the crew's employer.

STG housing barge Jascon 33 was attacked by gunmen in the Gulf of Guinea, 60km off the Nigerian coast on Saturday.

Twentyseven people were reportedly on the barge, seven of them expatriate workers. STG, which provides support vessels to oil companies operating in Nigeria, confirmed that four nationals from Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, and Malaysia on its staff had been kidnapped, two security guards had been wounded and two Nigerian sailors had been killed.

Surapong said STG representatives had reportedly managed to talk to the kidnapped crewmen and found that they were safe.

The Thai Embassy in Abuja has been assigned to work with the embassies of Indonesia and Malaysia to talk to the Nigerian government to secure the release of the crewmen.

Ministry's spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said the Nigerian government had ordered its navy to intensify its search by boat for the four foreigners kidnapped during the deadly attack but it had not located them.

The Thai Embassy in Abuja is closely coordinating with the Indonesian and Malaysian embassies in the Nigerian capital to exchange information on the kidnap victims.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but kidnapping and ransom activities are frequent in the area, mostly by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.

Prathana Saengthong, 14, and her family has received a house and reliefitem bag from Their Majesties the King and the Queen via Privy Councillor ACM Chalit Pukbhasuk. The royals have graciously extended help to the family, which includes a disabled father

UTTARADIT: -- Their Majesties the King and the Queen have graciously answered to a girl's plea for help, granting her a scholarship and a house to her family, which includes a father who is disabled.

"Their Majesties' gracious help has brought immense delight to my family," said 14yearold Prathana Saengthong. "Their Majesties are like my father and mother."

She vowed to be a good member of society and to study hard.

Prathana is a Mathayom 3 student at the Anuban Chumchon Hua Dong School in Uttaradit. Her academic performance is very good.

The scholarship from Their Majesties will allow Prathana to receive education up to the bachelor's degree level.

In 2009, she wrote a petition asking for help from Their Majesties because her family was homeless even though they had been working hard.

Her father, whose legs are atrophied by polio, earns about Bt250 a day as a dynamo technician and receives a monthly allowance of Bt500 from the Tambon Nam Krai Administrative Organisation. Her mother, 41, sells grilled chicken and earns just Bt150 a day. The couple has three children ranging in age from seven to 16.

Through Their Majesties' help, the Tambon Hua Dong Administrative Organisation has built a house over on 37squarewah plot. The house has two bedrooms and one bathroom.

Privy Councillor ACM Chalit Pukbhasuk presided over yesterday's ceremony to hand over the house to Prathana.

Kittiratt urges BoT to revise monetary policy

Bangkok, 9 August 2012 (NNT) – Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, has urged the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to revise its monetary policy to promote Thai export.

According to Kittiratt, he wants the BOT to readjust its monetary policy regarding Thai currency. He said the Central Bank should lower the interest rate from 3 percent to 2.5 percent in order to trigger investment in the country and most importantly to weaken the Thai baht, which will result in more export of the country given foreign importers will have a higher purchasing power when purchasing Thai products.

And since Thailand is facing a 400 billion baht deficit in the 2012 fiscal year, the government will try its best to balance the budget as early as possible. Mr. Kittiratt added that the government will carry on its mega investment project within this year.
