Thanks in advance for any comments. I arrived in Bangkok Oct.13th 2011 so my retirement type O-A visa requires an one year extension of stay Oct.13th 2012. How long before or close to this date can I apply for the extension. Are you required to do it at least 30 days before or within 30 days that it is required. I can't really find any clear answer on the websites and would appriciate your guideance on the matter. Also my 90 day check in is due on Sept. 25 and it would be nice if I could do them both the same day since I am not that close to the Government Complex Bld Div.1 in Bangkok. Also I have seen differenty numbers of document copies in various sites. Is two copies of all the required documents and photos sufficient? Thanks again and I did go through many threads prior to this post, I hope it isn't too repetitious.

As said within the last 30 days so Sep 25 would be fine if you really want to extend - you are aware that if visa is really multi entry and still valid (one year from date of issue) you can cross a border and receive a new one year permitted to stay stamp?

Thanks and I was aware but getting to the border sounds like more work than going to the government center and thanks for explaining and reassurment on the last 30 days part. Before I thought it was at least 30 days or more, this might have saved me a wasted trip which I don't need.

If you go to immigration for an extension you will need to satisfy the financials ie Embassy letter confirming more than 65,000 baht /month income or 800,000 in a Thai Bank with letter from bank, or a combination. If the multi O-A is still valid , less than a year since issued. then a border run will, as said, give you another year.

You have paid for a Multi Entry. Why not use it.

A border run is less stressful than a visit to Immigration.

So all I have to do is hop on a bus here in Bangkok and cross a border and I do not need a re-entry permit since I am not currently on an extension of stay, is that correct? If so; where in your opinion would you suggest I go and can I do it in one day or would I need to do an overnighter. I am new at all of this and really appriciate your comments. I do not drive here so a bus would seem like the best alternative to me. Thanks.

You must be sure your visa is still valid - check the use date on that first (not your current permitted to stay date). If you do before visa expires you do not want a re-entry permit (that would only provide current stay time). You can cross at any legal border crossing and there is organized trips by bus/van from Bangkok daily for about 2,000 baht all inclusive. You leave early morning and return late afternoon.

You can extend at immigration for 1,900 baht fee plus cost of Embassy letter and trip so border would likely be a bit cheaper but make sure your visa is valid if you use that option.

My visa went into effect the day I arrived in Thailand, Oct. 13th, 2011 and is valid for one year. I am not currently on a permit to stay but will be after Oct. 13th, 2012 or at least this is the way I see it. I have sufficient money in my Thai bank and therefore do not need a Embasy letter, only the documents supporting the money is there. So the 1,900 bath at immigration might be the best for me; and also I already have most of the paperwork completed so that isn't a huge hassel. I will sort this all out and decide, I tend to talk myself into and out of things on a regular basis. Anyway thank you all for your imput as it is much appreciated. Great site here for the ignorant newbies like myself. At least I got the good answer on the 30 days is within the last 30 days and not as I thought which was at least 30 days prior.

The one year validity of the visa starts on the date it was issued not the date used.

You have a permit to stay until Oct.13 but in order to get another entry you must use the visa before the expiration date.

If you made your border run on or before Sept. 25 you would not need to do the 90 day report until 90 days from the date you re-enter the country.

It was issued August 9th, 2011 so it appear the border run is no longer an option. Live and learn I guess but now I know. And thank for the info on the date of issue versus the date used, I was incorrect on that thinking also. Great information everyone and thanks so much. I have gotten so much more from this board than I can find on the immigration site and they don't seem to be staffed properly to answer the phones in a timely manner.

You need to be sure that you have every thing ready for your extension in October or late September. Remember if you are using the 800K baht in the bank option it must be there at least 60 days. For this option you need a letter from the bank confirming the balance no earlier (same day is best if possible) than the day before you to immigration. Plus copies of all pages of bank book.

Thanks, I have already talked to the bank where the money has been there since Novemeber 2011 about the letter and they said fine the cost is 100 baht. I will do it the day before because I plan to leave early for imigration. Is two copies of all documents and photos sufficient? I will have them all neatly organized as they ask and cash to pay for everything. Thanks again.
