Ok. So saw this tv show the other night about people hunting for houses internationally. The guy was from the USA. Seemed to say "his" company was sending him to Thailand and allowing him to do his internet work over there. What kind of visa did he have where he was able to book long term rentals? Didn't seem like he was marketing or doing anything particularly related to Thailand.

I'm sure he will do the same as the other million of us expats do living here. Many are working just as this American you mention will be. He will of course get the proper "B" visa, WP etc and like the rest of us look for a place to rent. Very simple really.

Most come here first and rent a place then find work and go through the legal visa/WP process.

One of the problems with House Hunters International (The TV show you reference) is that they never delve into the visa aspect of these purchases

They have had numerous episodes set in Mexico and never mention that Mexico has many of the same (if not more strict) restrictions on land ownership than Thailand

Yeah but what kind of Work Permit would he get? Neglecting obvious bribes and other subterfuge, doesn't a proper Thai work permit have to come from a "proper" thai company? I am 55 and qualify for the Thai Retirement Visa. While I might do some consulting in the USA on the side or part time, I don't think that in any way would violate any terms of the Thai Retirement Visa. I was just curious what angles these guys were working.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Any punter can set up a Thai company if following the guidelines. Usually there's all kinds of ads on Thai Visa where law firms are advertising company formations, B visas etc. It comes down to spending some money for paperwork, then paying taxes etc.
