Ministers to tout achievements

BANGKOK: -- Ministers in Yingluck Shinawatra's government will start to announce the achievements of their first year in office next week, while the prime minister herself will offer a big picture of the administration's performance in mid-September, PM's secretary-general Suranand Vejjajiva said yesterday.

The full report to be announced to Parliament is expected to be complete in late September, he said.

Suranand was speaking after a meeting of Pheu Thai ministers at Phitsanulok House yesterday morning. He said the Democrats' criticisms of the government's performance were just rhetoric, and Yingluck was happy with the achievements reported yesterday.

Suranand said the reason that the presentation would be done ministry-by-ministry was that each had lots of details to clarify to the public.

"If we let five ministers speak together, we are afraid that the public will not get as many details as they should. Moreover, the minister might miss some issues due to limited time." He said the media would be allowed to pose questions while the presentation would start from the ministries in the quota of the Pheu Thai Party.

Yingluck will speak on reconciliation policies, he said.

Government Spokeswoman Sansanee Nakpong said the date of each ministry's presentation had yet to be announced.

Suranand said the presentation would include a comparison of the achievements of the Yingluck government and those of the previous government under Abhisit Vejjajiva. However, it would not be fair to blame the Yingluck government for the many problems that had continued from Abhisit's administration.

"I have to say that many problems were inherited by this government from the previous one. For example, the debts that resulted from financial mismanagement, or the problem of the unrest in the South. If the media go back and look at the prime minister's [Yingluck's] policy declaration, you will discover this," he said.

Asked about the policies of the government that have been heavily criticised, Suranand said it was normal for policies to face problems in practice. But when faced with criticism or complaints, the government let the relevant minister clarify the issue to the media.

For example, Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyaphirom had clarified to the media the policies and measures to tackle problems of higher consumer-product prices.

"I believe that the media should talk to the [responsible] ministers on each issue," he said.

Suranand said the government did not have to study and prepare answers to the opposition's attack on the economic problems, which he said were certain to be targeted by the opposition during the censure debate.

He said the government regularly monitored the economy, adding that the figures for many sectors were strong enough to reach the expected growth targets in the next quarter indicated by the National Economic and Social Development Board.

Pheu Thai caretaker director Phumtham Wechayachai said he thought the government passed its test in the first year. The Democrats should have waited to hear the government's achievement declaration before using information to counter it, he said.

If I read this correctly, this government is blaming the long running trouble in the south on the previous government, something that was going on long before the previous government had office, and the current govenment is blaming the debt that is on this nation on the previous administration, which government has burrowed hugh amounts to fund popularist policies? It wasn't the previous government!

Yes. Their Tak Bai and Kru Se policies must have worked wonders for southern support. All from the masters of reconciliation

They have done a great job so far

Farmers have no money ... and are going further into debt

They raised minimum wage to 300 per day ... then raised taxes on smoke and booze to get that money back

They let a large portion of the country flood

Personally I cannot think of one positive thing they have done

But it does not matter, it is all the previous administrations fault

Given the crest of optimism and popular support that swept this government to power it is almost unbelievable how ham fisted and incompentent they have been in the implementation of nearly every one their election promises.

One Tablet promise - currently being rolled out - delayed and over budget, teachers poorly trained and rural infrastructure not ready

Rice Pledging scheme - riddled with corruption according to many sources including the PM - farmers get a minimal if any financial benefit

Average rise in total household debt by about 3'000 baht year on year.

300 minimum wage - only in 7 provinces

Flood prevention scheme - massive amounts of money siphoned off, lacking transparency.

Rising cost of living - PM states its imaginary

Nepotism, drunken behavior in parliament and police force (but that's a norm for Thailand so don't hold it against the current government)

High speed rail link for priority (aka rich, foreign or both) passengers constantly touted, yet the current rail system (for non priority passengers) remains totally broken and dangerous.

Southern violence continues to spiral out of control - Chalrem put in charge

War on drugs - a positive - increased numbers of offenders 'appear' to be caught / Offest with an admission of rampant drug use / trade from within prisons, but government are trying to put a lid on this - so well done!

Exports increase, revenue increases as economy grows - but after yesterdays admission of lying - can we believe this?

Reconciliation- not even gonna go there - but a fairly obvious fail as reconciliation requires both opposing parties to join together and meet in the middle, agree on a way forward for the benefit of all. Just hasn't happened.

So achievements - minor at best and overshadowed by poorly thought out, spurious election pledges and half broken promises

From hero to zero in about a year, the race to bottom has been won.

Good post.

The race to Thaksin's bottom is a favourite weekend task for some

Gotta be kidding!. There's not much to miss due to limited time. What a clown and clone she is......wai.gif

Hmm how can the give updates when they havent kept a record of what they have done? Remember the budget debate, they ran out of hard drive space, or the paperwork is pending.

It is a terrible state of affairs

Bagwan, you got there ahead of me. The achievments could be summerized with their true net worth/various bank account balances, becoming public record. What they have done for the general Thai public could be summerized with the PM's standard response, "be patient, we are doing our best, the newly appointed committee is looking into it, and for goodness sake, believe what we tell you, not what you see nor experience."

The major achievement of the Yingluk government after one year is still being in government. I believe it is a hard act to follow, and will be come increasingly more difficult on subsequent attempts as their incompetence becomes harder to overcome.

I am not sure you are reading it correctly - all that is being said is that the problems in the south were already there under the previous government and not something new.

As for borrowing money to fund populist policies, this has been a mainstay of Thai politics for a long time now with all parties being guilty. To deny the previous government didn't indulge in it is just burying your head in the sand.

There is a difference between a ladle and a bucket though.
