Yala man beheaded, burned on way to hospital

THE NATION

YALA: -- Insurgents continued their attacks in Yala province on Thursday, killing a man who was heading to a hospital, then beheading the corpse and burning the body.

Police said Tuandaoh Tuansulong, 58, was driving his pickup from his home in Bannang Sata district early in the morning to Yala Hospital, where he was to receive dialysis treatment.

While he was driving on Talingchan-Sri Sakhon Road, he was ambushed by an unknown number of insurgents who shot him dead.

Police were alerted to the attack at 7am. By the time they arrived at the scene, the victim's charred vehicle had been left on the road with his headless body, also burnt, in the back of the vehicle.

Police found his head, which had also been burned, on the roadside about five metres from the scene. The victim is believed to have been killed before being beheaded and burned, as police found a bullet wound to his head.

Prasit Meksuwan, president of the Civil Society Council of the Southern Border Provinces, said violence in the area has increased since the end of Ramadan.

Insurgents have resumed distributing pamphlets in Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, threatening to kill Buddhists and damage their property if they refuse to move out of the area, Prasit said.

The surge in violence in recent months has left the morale and spirit of local people at its lowest point in a long time. The insurgents know this and have begun distributed pamphlets again - something they have done on previous occasions, the council president said.

Offering a different assessment, Deputy Prime Minister General Yutthasak Sasiprapha claimed that people now feel safer in the South because the government has effectively handled the situation. More people are willing to work in the deep Southern provinces, he said.

He was speaking after chairing a meeting evaluating the government's performance handling the violence in the South after a year in office. The Yingluck government has not yet decided when it will deliver its reports on the government's first-year performance in Parliament.

Referring to a recent attack on a train in Narathiwat, Yutthasak said officials had earlier warned that such an attack might happen as insurgents sought to retaliate for recent killings of their men.

If he is feeling so safe then let him go and stay there for a couple of weeks...without armed support.

I completely fail to comprehend why some are carrying out such brutal killings. I assume it's to create fear in the community, but on the reverse they lose any sympathy for their goals for autonomy if indeed this was carried out by "separatists"

Oh, it's just a little white lie.

Good for the people's confidence....

The only way of fighting the insurgency is to arm the people, give AK47 to all thai buddhst and alllow then to shot dead the first muslim that dares to try to stop them and you'll see how fast this insurgents will disappear.

Often the ideal or religion that was the foundation of the opposing philosophy gets abducted by other groups with differing self interested agendas and it perpetuates into radical violence. At that stage all the original well meaning ideology is squandered and lost and not recognized by the existing authority or recognizes it as "terrorist" and ignores the root ideal of the majority.

There is a fine line between freedom fighting and terrorism. The marvel of a Ghandi as a leader is even more pronounced when you compare his achievement and methodology to today's tactics.

Sorry, but when a group of armed men stops a civilian who is minding his own business, murder him, decapitate the body and then set it on fire is not a freedom fighter, they are terrorists.

The religion of peace at work again.

There are countless brutal murders committed by Buddhists in Thailand, but not once have I seen a post on TV making this comment about Buddhists.

That's not the point. This was a religious murder, with the murderers stating that they will continue to kill any Buddhists that don't leave the region. Yes, there is violence everywhere and there is usually a motive. In this case, the Muslims that have drawn the line in the sand because they don't Buddhists. Go figure.

Utter nonsense, Simple1. We are talking here about a brutal sectarian execution in the pursuit of the ethnic cleansing of the South. Pray tell us of all those similar killings of Muslims by Buddhists that you seem so worried about.

And tomorrow the local muslim leader will be bothering the rest of us by taking the stage on national tv in order to explain how peaceful Muslims really are. Well they are not peaceful because if they were just a bit serious they would go on to the street and pressure their own communities to give up these mass murderers and terrorists.

The person murdered was a Muslim - a bit difficult to call this out as ethnic cleansing. In any case if it was a Buddhist on Buddhist killing my comment still applies as Buddhism incorporates a tenant not to kill and viewed as a faith of peace. So why do people only infer a derogatory comment to a "Religion of Peace" when Muslims commit murder.

When I was there, day-to-day life in the deep south is quite normal like other parts of Thailand. Every day I was there, there was an explosion in one of the provinces, but the people around me and myself didn't feel anything, physically or psychologically.

Very fair comment and some Muslims leaders in the Deep South have gone on record to condemn the violence. They need to be brave souls as they are then targeted for killing. A quote follows:

"The use of violence by insurgents destroys the lives and property of innocent people as well as government officers, compromising the trust and economic base of our society," Governor Dejrat said. "We need everyone's help in guiding those who have gone astray by joining the insurgents to come together to help rebuild a safe and law-abiding society through strict adherence of religious principles."

First it was the Christians then the Buddhists now. What's next? Hindu and what else? These people thinks the world owes them a living!!

Reminds me of Indonesia! Why don't they get a life and focus on making money by getting a decent job?

There's more to it in life than fighting and killing. As the Thais would say: More stupid than a Buffalo & born lower than a mongrel dog.

Today (and it's barely noon).

Probably right but... the difference here is that those in the south 'proudly' state they do it in the name of Islam. Except from Buddhism, the 3 major monoitic religion used war and terror to spread. The so called buddhists in the south committing the same despicable crimes do it as a reaction to what those insurgants or terrorists or whatever you'd like to call them, to the entire community.
