Questions About The Non-Immigrant-O Visa

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,

I´m German, aged 55 and applying for the non-immigrant-O, multiple entry. Probably staying most of the time in Bangkok. The visa is said to be valid one year, leaving the country every 90 days.

Questions are these (as I have not found any decent information on them so far):

1

What exactly does "valid for 1 year" mean? Do you have to do your several re-entries WITHIN that period? Or is it possible to stay a couple of weeks in the neighbouring countries each time you leave Thailand after a 90-day-period?

For example: entering Thailand the first time, staying 90 days, going to Cambodia for a bit of motorbike-riding, re-entry after, say, 4 weeks, do the second 90 days in Thailand and so on.

This procedure obviously sums up to MORE than a year.

2

Do you have to register at your local immigration-office? Probably Bangkok again. I´ve read somewhere, that you need to report to the immigration, when you leave after 90 days and state clearly that you want to re-entry, otherwise your visa might run invalid. Is that true?

Are there any complications/restrictions if you like to rent a private appartement?

thanks for answers

dede

1. Unlimited number of entries for the one year period for stays up to 90 days each. You come and go as you wish but can not stay longer than 90 days on any entry using visa.

2. No. No contact required with immigration outside of normal entry/exit.

3. No.

Also, if you leave just before the year is up and come back before the year is up, you can stay another 90 days, in effect having a 15-month visa.

It is very straightforward and what I had when I first arrived. I wanted to travel a bit, so it suited me perfectly.

Just before means:

Minimum the day before the stamped date, next year.

(Not that I can add much to above posts, but here's my recent experience/2-bob's worth).

You will be given (well, you paid for it) a visa with an expiry date stamped on it, expiring one year after the visa was issued. You have to enter Thailand before the visa expires...

You can't stay inside for more than 90 days (by going to a border crossing, at least the Thai officials have an idea as to where you are). But sure you can come/go as many times as you want...

If you decide you want to live here, then close to (within, say, two weeks of) the time your visa expires, apply for a 12 month extension (this is what is commonly referred to as the 'retirement visa' - it is actually just an extension, which can be done every year).

Be aware, too, that if you want to live here, you need to show every year that you have an income in your country of 800,000+ baht OR a bank account with a balance of 800,000 baht OR (best way) a combination of the two. So a good idea is to take your passport a bank and open an account... can search through the forum here for more detailed info. AA

Two corrections to the above post.

You may extend during the last 30 days of any 90 day stay - visa expiration has nothing to do with extensions.

The minimum income is 65k per month (which x 12 would be 780k per year) and that normally only requires a letter from your Embassy so is likely the easiest method for most people with good pensions. Using bank deposit or combined methods will require 800k figure and if just bank deposits also require money to be in account a fixed period of time prior to application. Opening a bank account is always a good idea.

You do not have to spend 4 weeks outside Thailand if you do not want to.

I basically exit Thailand immigration,

drove 2 min up to Malaysia boarder,

stamp in at Malaysia Custom,

walked around to exit,

stamp out of Malaysia,

and back into Thailand again.

Anyone done this same thing at Cambodia boarder??

It can be done at any border crossing that can stamp you out of Thailand, and into the other country and then back into Thailand.

Thanks a lot for the info. It cleared up my point. Once in Thailand I certainly will have more questions and I will be back here again. Quite a cool forum.
