The speaker of Burma’s Lower House of Parliament, Shwe Mann, said the country needs rule of law to establish democracy, echoing the long-held views of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He made the remarks on Saturday at a meeting between legal professionals and a Lower House rule of law committee chaired by Suu Kyi. According to state-run media, he said that if existing laws do not serve the interests of the country and its citizens, they “should be amended or revoked.†Suu Kyi was appointed head of the 15-member committee when it was formed on Aug. 7.
