New Plates

Featured Replies

I've seen a number of threads about red plates on a new car, but no definite answer

heres my situation:

I got a new Isuzzu on July 3 2012 (50% finance) , drove it away with red plates and brown book.

Today (Sep 11th 2012) I received

1. copies of the blue book (I wont receive the real book until the finanace is paid)

2. tax sticker

3. white "number plates"

the reason I say "number plates" is that they look like number plates, but on closer inspection they are cardboard wrapped in transparent plastic.

The dealer is now asking me to send back the red plates.

Any ideas what I do with the cardboard, and how I can convert into a real plate that I can actually screw onto my car?!!

cheers!

Government makes the plates. Ask for an explanation. Could be the problems they are having with manufacturing the things and they are a temporary fix. sad.png

Go to a number plate shop and have a set made!

Didn't know there were any blink.png , The real thing has a government stamp pressed in the plate. huh.png

Yes, but the government does not make them. The problem was that the company making them did not meet the government requirements.

And yes, there are shops where one can have a numberplate made. No idea whether these are legal yes or no.

As long as the plates are of the correct size I see no reason why they would not be considered legal, many people have plates made, as long as the number plate is identical to the dealer issued plate I can see no problem!!

But do they have the government seal (stamp) ?. If no you have a problem. sad.png

They are not legal.

Rubbish!! Explain why they are not legal!! The plate makers make plates identical to what the dealer issues so there is no problem.

Must have government stamp pressed into the plate. smile.png IF a plate maker has the stamp then no probs.

Are people really worried about a stamp on a number plate which can hardly be seen, I doubt there is one case of anyone being stopped and fined for having a plate without this little stamp, a lot of cars have no plates so there will be no problem with these made up plates!!

In US plates are made by prisoners (I think)...maybe in Thailand there are not enough prisoners to make them ?!...LOL laugh.png

Where's my tea a bit selfish don't you think!!

Whether it's legal and whether or not you can get away with it are two different things. I know it is not legal to use phony plates in the US, and I doubt it is legal here. The fact that people are doing it means nothing.

But as the new plates now have smaller letters & numbers unless the shops are up to speed you will get old style plate doesn't match age of vehiclesmile.png .

I am sure the government stamp relates to the size of the plate, size of the lettering and the colour of the plate(this is what the stamp is saying, is there a law saying the plate must be made of a certain material? I Believe there is law regarding size, size of lettering and colour, if this is the case then a made up plate that conforms to these rules will be no problem, plates that are larger or smaller obviously would not be government approved.

Look at the right hand corner of your plates. Government seal pressing.

When was the last time you were stopped and the police took a close look at your number plate, I am guessing never!! the government stamp relates to the size of the plate, size of the lettering and the colour, as long as a made up plate conforms to these rules there will be no problem.

Explain what the government seal is saying? Is it saying you can not have a Plate without this stamp. Why? Is it against the law to have a number plate without this stamp. why?

Well, I insisted firmly to have official red plates and they have stamp and brown book that comes with them. ;)

So far, not been stopped by the police in BKK and in the province, even at night.

You are totally correct

Thai vehicle license plates' are license plates displayed on all motorized road vehicles in Thai, as required by law. The designs, colors, shapes and dimensions are specified in Ministry of Transport's regulations. Only license plates issued by the Department of Land Transport, Ministry of Transport, are legal

You are a very nice and considerate chap!

No embossed stamp the plate isn't legal - although the government has told the police to relax the law as there is a manufacturing backlog due to the floods and also the problem of paint flaking on a large batch of plates. As I posted in a thread before I got a replacement plate in less than 7 days as my boss knows somebody high up at the transport department - to the OP i'd want something in writing about the dodgy plate's the dealer is trying to pass off before I gave back the red plates/brown book
