BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least three people were killed after an attack targeted a United States base in northern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.

The attack occurred early Tuesday morning at the Bagram Airfield in the province of Parwan, which is operated by the U.S. military.

Several rockets were fired at the base, destroying a helicopter and damaging a number of others in the fortified airfield. The attack comes on the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and just hours after the prison at Bagram was transferred from U.S. to Afghan authorities.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) have not released an official statement, but spokesman Michael Cole spoke with Khaama Press confirming the attack. At least three people were killed, but a number of others are believed to be injured following the attack. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility of the attack.
