BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong told the House yesterday that he did not tell lies about this year's export projections.

"I, as a deputy prime minister and the finance minister, do not lie and will never lie and do not want to lie," he said. Responding to a motion by Democrat MP Kiart Sitthi-amorn, Kittiratt said he disagreed with the projections of Finance Ministry permanent officials but he did not want to spoil their efforts so he did not speak out.

Kiart played a video clip of Kittiratt's speech at the Dusit Thani Hotel on August 23. During the speech, Kittiratt admitted that sometimes he had to exaggerate about the country's economic growth.

"But [the government] must aim high in order to create confidence," Kittiratt said in the speech. "The finance minister needs to lie sometimes to create good feelings. The world knows this as a 'white lie'. The goal is to create confidence, which in turn benefits the country's economy as a whole."

Kiart told the House that Kittiratt's admitting he told "white lies" prompted Thai and foreign critics to write more than 500 articles.

Kiart said he wondered whether the government's other policies would also be "white lies".

Kittiratt said the Finance Ministry's permanent officials consulted him about the export projections and they saw that last year Thailand could achieve 15 per cent growth despite the flood crisis so they expected that this year the country would achieve the same growth rate.

The minister said he disagreed but he did not express his opinion out of fear that it would lead to other problems and would cause government officials to become discouraged.

When he gave the speech at the Dusit Thani, Kittiratt said he was simply speaking his mind but that he was not good at playing with his words.

love it!

A senior member of the ruling party admitting to the world that any statement he makes regarding his post, cannot be considered 'unambiguous'.

Any ideas where the International community can get what they feel are honest answers?

Now he's telling a white lie about saying he was telling white lies.

His pants are about to burst into flames.

Is it me or is his nose getting longer??

what so you expect, bunch of incompetent minsters are running the county

This gopher sets a new high, maybe low is a better term, when we say "he wakes up in a new world each day"

It seems he does not know when to stop digging!

How about as the Boss, the fear that to publish the figures as an official ministry projection would con the population and foreign investors in to taking actions they might otherwise avoid.

I am speechless. Do these people have ANY idea?

A Minister now that not only lies but admits he does not have the backbone to correct his staff on matters of National Importance! Thaksin will be choking on his Camel milk this morning.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool...............

An admitted liar wants people to believe him. I'm sorry, I don't understand.

That seems to be the policy of every single government organisation..

TAT - and numbers.. they are all over the place.. Have been for as many years as I can remember.

Claiming 80-90% occupancy when there is as much action in the hotels, you could hear a penny drop ~ something they haven't !

Last years flood.. Dont even get me started about that.. dam_n "white lies" was everywhere.. Or ignorance / stupidity...

Thaksin, Ver. 4.0 has a lot of bugs in the software

.

What did this guy get his degree in.......... Applied Bullshit?

The former university President (fittingly, at Shinawatra University) Kittiratt has an MBA.

As opposed to the fictional competent ones?

if this guy is an example of Thai competence; I don't lie, have never lied, and don't want to lie, but sometimes we have to lie and I'm not good with words. holy crap! We have to redefine losing face.

Finance Minister Kittiratt is a prime example of the success PM Yingluck had in using selection criteria 'knowledge', 'capability' and 'potential' for her cabinet members. K. Kittiratt knows better than any or all from his ministry (insert some smiley)

He says he did. He says he didn't. What should you believe?

The answer is Nothihg!

Anyone making a decision based on any statistics from his ministry is buying a pig in a poke! Good luck!!

Is this, ’lying about the fact he lied’?
