Rangers among four shot dead in Yala

Nakarin Chinworakomon,

Narong Nuansakul

The Nation on Sunday

YALA: -- Suspected insurgents shot dead three rangers and a housekeeper before burning their pick-up in Yala's Muang district yesterday morning.

Police suspect members of a militant group led by Abdul Roseh Jarong from nearby Tambon Khao Toom in Pattani's Yarang district carried out the attack.

Muang Yala superintendent Pol Colonel Narin Busaman said the attack took place near Tharn Nampueng School in Tambon Sateng Nok at 6.10am. Police found the bodies of the rangers from paramilitary ranger unit No 41 in Raman district - Somyos Waewphetch, Kampol Mangwong and Panurat Boonthawongsa - and the body of ranger camp housekeeper Porn Naphetch lying on the road near the burning vehicle.

They collected dozens of spent M16 assault rifle bullets and 9mm pistol bullets from the scene.

Police inquiries found that the rangers and housekeeper were travelling to a market when at least five gunmen hiding in a roadside forest opened fire at them with M16 assault rifles and 9mm handguns, before stealing the rangers' M16 assault rifles, setting fire to the car and fleeing.

Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre director Pol Colonel Thawee Sodsong later attended a bathing ceremony for the four victims at Yala Municipal Crematorium and presented the families of the deceased with Bt500,000 in assistance money. Meanwhile, a combined ranger and police team yesterday afternoon surrounded a durian plantation in Tambon Mareu Bo-ok of Narathiwat's Joh I Rong district, after a tip-off about insurgents. They seized bomb-making materials and tools that could make 29 bombs (18 booby trap bombs and 11 battery-detonated bombs), but the insurgents escaped.

In related news, Narathiwat police yesterday announced the arrest of Ba Cho district resident and bomb suspect Assan Sama, 23, who allegedly carried out a bomb attack with three others on a team of Thai marines in Muang Narathiwat on August 7, which injured two. Police also issued arrest warrants for three alleged accomplices, aged from 23-35.

Central Group chief Wanchai passes away

The Nation on Sunday

30190479-01_big.jpg

Wanchai

Wanchai Chirathiwat, chairman of diversified Central Group, Thailand's largest department store chain and a major shopping centre operator, has passed away at the age of 84.

Wanchai presided over the group's steady expansion over the past several decades in Thai and overseas markets, marked by the recent acquisition of a major European department store chain which has 11 branches in Italy.

He is the second son of Tiang Chirathiwat, founder of Central Group, which was established after World War II.

The original Central retail outlet was opened on Bangkok's Si Phya Road, selling imported books, garments and cosmetics, among other goods.

Later, Wanchai and his late elder brother Samrit helped their father open the first Central department store in Bangkok's Wang Burapha area.

In 1989, Wanchai became chairman of Central Group, after which he started to re-organise the fast-expanding diversified retail conglomerate for further expansion in both domestic and foreign markets.

Central Retail Corporation was set up to take charge of all retail activities, while Central Pattana Co became responsible for shopping centre development schemes.

The trading and wholesale businesses were grouped under Central Marketing Group while the hotel business is under Centara Hotels and Resorts and the fast-food business under Central Restaurants Group.

The diversified multibillion-baht business empire has been run by the Chirathiwat Family Council, which consists of key members of the family, especially those from the second, third and fourth generations.

Suthitham Chirathiwat is now chairman of Central Group's executive board. The group's combined sales revenue is projected to top Bt188 billion this year, while the group's combined investment outlay for 2012 is about Bt30 billion.

The group has also prepared for the Asean Economic Community, which will be effective in 2015, creating a single market of some 600 million consumers in 10 countries.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and China are among the top markets being eyed by Central Group.

Over the next five years, sales from overseas operations are projected to rise to more than 20 per cent of the total, up from the current 11 per cent, according to Suthitham.

Agriculture Ministry confident in continued improvement of Thai rubber industry

BANGKOK, 16 September 2012 (NNT) – The deputy agriculture minister has expressed confidence in the continued improvement of the Thai rubber sector.

During this week’s “Yingluck Government Meets the People” program, Deputy Agriculture Minister Nattawut Saikuar said that signs of positive global economic development has pushed the domestic price of local natural rubber sheet no. 3 higher to 83.85 baht per kilogram, while its price in the futures market also went up to 98.92 baht per kilogram.

Looking at other positive signals from all markets, Mr. Nattawut is confident that the rubber prices will only rise further.

The money was presented to Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand Tin Win on Friday, September 14, by Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release, many parts of Myanmar were struck by the flood disaster, especially in some parts of Yangon, Irrawaddy, Bago and Tenasserim, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 70,000-85,000 people as well as heavy damages to various rice plantations across the country.

At the donation-presenting ceremony, the Myanmar Ambassador expressed his thanks and appreciation towards Thailand’s contribution, as well as support at bilateral, regional and multilateral frameworks. He also took this opportunity to express his condolences towards the recent flooding in Sukhothai Province.

The Government of Myanmar earlier assisted Thailand with 50,000 USD in cash and over 15 tons of relief supplies to help Thai people cope with results of the flood crisis at the end of 2011.
