All medical specialities are represented and the hospital is fully equipped to a high standard, including an excellent trauma centre. At Sriphat (also known the “Special Medical Services Center”) it is possible to see many of the most senior physicians affiliated with the CMU Medical School in a private capacity. No other hospital in the area offers the same range of expertise, and it is quite affordable. All of the doctors speak English to a decent standard or better and most of the administrative and nursing staff do also, but to varying degrees. There is also an efficient queuing system in place whereby a new patient can see a medical specialist within very short time scales and subsequent visits rarely involve more than a two hour wait. In this as in many government hospitals, the quality of care is much higher than the hospital’s general appearance and lack of amenities might suggest. Finally, this hospital has extensive 24 hour Accident and Emergency facilities, including an air ambulance. Ramkamheng (“Ram”) Hospital is a private for-profit institution which is slightly more convenient in terms of language and waiting time, but also more expensive and offering a more limited range of medical specialities. In some cases physicians at CMU also have hours at RAM. Rajavej Hospital, Hospital is a private 150 bed for profit hospital that specialises in Orthopedic and Gastrointestinal issues, it is priced between Sriphat and RAM and is staffed and equipped to cover most medical conditions. Rajavej Hospital, has a useful customer liaison function that provides translation and communication between Thai and English and Japanese, however, most doctors there speak English to a good standard. Another well known private hospital in the Chiang Mai area catering to the expatriate community is McCormick Hospital. Although private, it is non-profit, with rates that are similar to Rajavej Hospital,. Edited October 10, 2012 by chiang mai
elektrified
Good job cm. But just curious since you modified the list with the Rajavej Doctors if you or anyone you know have ever used any of them and what their experiences have been? I'm not in any way being negative as I know you put a lot of hard work into this and I respect your opinions. In the case of the Chiropractor, many members have commented positively about him so he is a good addition to the list. But how about some of the others like the two dentists, the internists, and the Dermatologist added from Rajavej for example? Do you or any members have any first-hand experience with them? I would be hesitant to go to one of the 'new' dentists on the list (for example) if no one in the large ex-pat community has ever used any of them. I recently went to one dentist recommended by many on here (not on the pinned list) and it was up there in the top 5 worst dental experiences of my life and was unbelievably painful. Next time I'll give your dentist a try.

Next time I'll give your dentist a try. I admit this is a bit of a gamble but I wanted to expand the scope and add some specialties that we were missing, basically what I've done is to take the list of all doctors at Rajavej and then I've sat with two different people, separately, inside the hospital (both non-thai) and said, who do you think is really good and why - these are both people in a position to know the right answers. The result was a justification exercise with about a quarter of the doctors being classified as having really good communications skills AND being sound in terms of medical training/expertise. The latter was somewhat subjective, if a doctor had overseas training and experience he passed the test, ditto if he is in great demand and his reputation amongst current patients is high. An example of this is the Cardiologist Dr Tanawat who is only at Rajavej on Saturdays, such is his reputation that bookings to see him are now made weeks in advance else patients are refered to him at a different hospital or to another Cardiologist, I reckon that sort of demand is worthy of inclusion on the list. Same for the Gastroenterologist Dr Kannika, I've been seeing her for a few weeks and she is just oustanding, I don't have a second or third opinion on that so folks will just have to trust me. I hope folks feel that's a suitable selection process for the time being, obviously, if we get any negative reports we can start to remove individuals. But to be honest I could not see any other way to keep the list alive since we had not had inputs from any other source for quite some time.

elektrified
Next time I'll give your dentist a try. Dr Joy at Elite Smile would be a very sound choice, I can personally recommend. O.K. thanks very much. Do you know what her experience is and how long she has been practicing? I recently had to get a filing re-done as the old one had broken. I went to my usual dentist, Dr. Jarunee, but she could not repair it herself and referred me to her young associate. I refused, as I felt he was too inexperienced and frankly, not very good. He had repaired 2 filings in the past and it was a miserable experience (to say the least). I went to another guy recommended on the forum. He seemed like a good guy and had about 10 years experience. But on the day of the procedure it was absolute hell; painful like I couldn't believe. The guy became argumentative when I asked for another injection. It would be good if members could put forth their experiences with dentists for filings, root canals, extractions and so forth. I think most of us know who does a good job cleaning our teeth but it seems the practice here is to refer out for other procedures.

I don't know the answer to either of your question, best I can do is to say that Dr Joy is, I would guess, early to mid 40's, has excellent English, was very soft and light of touch when she dealt with me and was classed as "öutstanding" by Mrs CM when she did a couple of filling for her last month (Mrs CM is very hard to please when it comes to dentists, just one of her quirks I'm afraid). I'd be willing to bet that you will be pleased with Dr Joy.

I don't know, but typically any dentist who does fillings also does extractions, if anything root canals are something of a speciality that some dentists seem not to do. And no, I don't know if she's married, does windows and floors and is a good cook.
Mapguy
There are definitely "specialists" in some clinics. I know that is true of Grace. And there are certainly orthodontists, a popular money-making specialty. Chiang Mai really has an enormous range of dental practices. jb510
Thank you for the list Can't Remember and you're very welcome for the update. Regarding Dr. Siri - I had some possible skin cancers looked at and while he didn't think anything was a problem he said I'd have to come to the hospital at CMU if I wanted a biopsy of the one I was most concerned with. Just my one experience, but the the clinic may not be "full service", I'd probably of gone straight to the hospital if I'd known. You might also add: Chiang Mai Dental 4U Warut Muttaruk, DDS 382-384 Thapae Rd., T.Changmoi, A.Muang, Chiangmai 50300 Tel: 0-5387-4149 http://www.chiangmaidental4you.com/ I visited this morning for 2 dental implants and it went very well (so far). The doctor and the front desk staff both speak excellent english. The old folks might need to turn up their hearing aids though, as they all talk extremely quiet

Malindi
Has anyone got a good reccomendation on a dematologist? I need a few birth marks removed from my cheek. Not sure if it would fall under plastic surgery or dermatology. I suspect they would want a derma to look at it first. They are not small (1 cm across), so I have some concern as to post op cosmetic look of it too obviously. Thanks for any feedback. Kevin

He has done a bit of work on me - face included, and you could not possibly tell where he cut. He is a master surgeon (unlike skin doctors in Europe who left big ugly scars or skin doctors in USA who wanted US $10,000.00 to do what Dr. Siri did for about 8K THB). Mapguy
Scanning the list you can see no reference to a proctologist or to a podiatrist (DPM). I believe this is due to cultural hangups concerning the nether regions of the body. For example, how many Thai docs do a digital prostate exam. But practically speaking, relatively common services are needed. Hemorroids, for one, and painful foot problems, such as bunions, corns and calluses, for another. These aren't rare maladies. So, who in Chiang Mai is treating such ailments, where do they practice and what can you say about these docs? General surgeons? Orthopedists? Edit: I suppose, if embarrassed, you could contact Chiang Mai directly. Edited June 5, 2013 by Mapguy

If this old memory of mine serves me rite we have had a thread on foot Doctors. Some say there is none in Chiang Mai and others say there is one then along comes some one who says they are not accredited. You might try and find that old thread or start a new one it has been over a year and any thing can have happened. If you find one who can help me with the nerves in my feet as a result of my Diabetes it would be a great help. In the mean time I am going to try an acupuncturist. Also I see on the pinned list they have no acupuncturist or Doctor of Chinese medicine.

Dr Siri is a good choice for dermatology, his clinic on the moat sees a patient in and out of his office every three minutes (I jest not and I did time them) but he is good and doesn't mess around. Thai doctors wanting to do digital exams: I went through a phase last year where every doctor I saw seemed to want to get out the rubber gloves and it was getting worrisome, indeed many do subject their patients to the exam, including Dr Morgan. Podiatrists: very difficult to find and I can't help here, yet.
Kevin Dr. Siri from the pinned list above. He has done a bit of work on me - face included, and you could not possibly tell where he cut. He is a master surgeon (unlike skin doctors in Europe who left big ugly scars or skin doctors in USA who wanted US $10,000.00 to do what Dr. Siri did for about 8K THB). Much appreciated, I will track him down, Thanks!

It seems just around the first corner here... on the inside or the outside of the moat? Thanks, Kevin

North of walking street by same distance, no signs in English as I recall but ask locally and everyone knows where.

chiang mai
I suppose we should take it as a complement that others have copied the pinned list and taken it as their own work although some form of acknowledgement that this was the work of Thaivisa would not have gone amiss. interesting that they say they update the list every three months, imagine that: https://www.thewellcm.com/resources/thailand-and-chiang-mai-information/chiang-mai-information/medical-and-dental-care-in-chiang-mai-2013 Edited June 29, 2013 by chiang mai

There is a Christian songtaew driver that is in my moobaan every day picking people up in the mornings and bringing them back in the evenings - volunteers? I got a lift with him a couple of times and he seemed somewhat surprised that I didn't know what "The Well" was.
