webfact
Plodprasop: Flood unlikely, unless country face 10 storms in a month BANGKOK, 18 September 2012 (NNT) - Chairman of the Water and Flood Management Committee Plodprasop Suraswadi has said that overall precipitation this year is lower than last year’s, affirming that flood will not happen unless the country is battered by at least 10 storms in a month's time. According to Mr Plodprasop, not only is the volume of water predicted for this year is less than last year’s, the water management is also more effective this year, promising there would be no repeat of last year’s flood devastation. It would take at least ten storms battering the country in a month's time for the nation to see the flood of last year's magnitude; but that, he said, is very unlikely. The Water and Flood Management Committee is holding a meeting every day, and will announce the operation progress at 10 a.m; it will also report on the current water situation at 3 p.m.of each day. -- NNT 2012-09-

samtam
Trying to give a certain prediction about weather seems a pretty silly thing to do, so that's perhaps why he didn't. "10 storms", (which means exactly what?) Surely the amount of rainfall is the relevant factor, however unpredictable. "Very unlikely". But possible, or not, depending on the weather really.
bigbamboo
Ten storms in a month. That would be unprecedented. Wait a minute though........wasn't that what Professor Plod said about Sukothai's flooding? Edited September 18, 2012 by bigbamboo
BeforeTigers
What fantasy world do these people live in? Parts of Bang Kruai were flooded this morning. The river crested in 5 other provinces immediately to the north of the Capitol this week. In my language we call this B.S.

rics21
Those in the central Bangkok should be safe. Nonthaburi, western Bangkok, pathuthani, north Bangkok and north eastern Bangkok are likely to be flooded again. OzMick
Order more water pushers! And get on to Thaksin, ask where' are those bloody Korean pumps! Correction - the pumps have arrived some time ago, but they were actually shoes for Yingluk.

DLock
Looks out the window Nine more to go. I was just stuck in that storm for an hour. It was heavy and the drains weren't coping well. So Plodprasop, that's 1 storm on day 1. Your batting 1000 You just need 9 more in the next 29 days. You say "unlikely". I say "probable". But we all know you have left plenty of escape clauses in your press release. By being absolute on how many storms, yet vague on water volume per storm or overall water volume, your escape pod is safe.
Pib
I'm so glad it has been scientifically determined that it would take 10 more storms (nice round number ain't it...kinda like a person would pull out of you know where) to cause flooding equal to last year's flooding. By the way, it's raining right now over here in western Bangkok...does that count as one of the storms? Now when the industrial parks north of Bangkok flood again then I will begin to worry; until then I won't start filling sandbags.
asiawatcher
10 storms? What? This guy consulted "Dr Future" who told him 10 storms? So how many millimetres (inches) of rain does that equate to per storm? Clueless political grandstanding - and in case he had not noticed, Bangkok is flooding from rain over Bangkok, not from runoff upcountry so let's hope his "10 storms" do not happen upcountry or else the compounding effect will cause Bangkok to become the new Atlantis.
Soutpeel
BANGKOK: -- There is only a "slim chance" Bangkok will face flooding as bad as last year. That's because it would take at least 17 storms this and next month to produce the same amount of water, according to Royol Chitdon, a panel chief on the Water and Flood Management Committee (WFMC). So who is right the esteemed Minister Plopadop with his 10 or Royol Chitdon with his 17, or can we conclude either one or both gentlemen are talking through their bottoms and they are guessing ? spirit47
Maybe, one time he right...Accuwether frog say storm and rain for the rest of the month...But we will see, here in Lamlukka, the soil is full, if it raining the next 2 weeks, and the water from North come down, I think some of us will get wet feet again... But Ploppy means the whole country, not only Bangkok. The number will keep decreasing on each news comment (nothing to actually due to the number of real storms). When it's about 3 "storms" it will be time to move the furniture upstairs and head north again. Completely clueless - apart from making a fast book. dluek
Looks out the window Nine more to go. We've had 5 storms in the last 5 days in Bangkok, and each one has seen torrential downpours for extended periods of time. A buddy of mine in Lat Phrao is already walking through ankle deep water. Judging also by the pictures I'm seeing on the news right now, we're already half way to 10.

Both are talking through their bottom, and don't have any clue Let's just average the two estimates; 13.5 storms is the correct WAG. What is a half of a storm? Let the scientific minds of Thailand figure that one out...it should keep them busy until the rainy season is over.

alanferdi
If he says it is unlikely to happen, then you better believe....that he will actually happen Its a good thing that casinos do not exist in Thailand... otherwise we would have had something to bet on! If it does rain or something does go wrong .... I bet he would be the first to make excuses and take a flight out of Thailand.... The only consolation would be for him to suffer from Alzheimer to live with his conscience.
