Greetings,

A friend (I've been a monk for several years and have totally forgotten the particulars) has recently gotten a multiple entry non-immigrant 'O' visa and, residing in Kanchanaburi, is looking for the nearest border crossing to effect the required exit/ re-entry of said visa...

I'm thinking Mae Sot is the nearest, but am unsure as to whether, or not, a Burmese visa is needed in advance...going to BKK, if required, and cost being considerations....

I know that trekking down to the Malaysian border is a visa-less option, or the thousand Baht (at the border) Laotian (Vientiane) another, just looking for some tips on cost/convenience methods from those with some more experience...

Thank you,

Pra Maprow

Never been to Mae Sot, but crossing at Ranong = 10$ cash, can exchange 500 baht next door to Thai Immigration for a 10$ bill...... No visa just a small round stamp in and out + out and back in of Thailand stamps takes up less then 1/2 page in passport.

or the thousand Baht (at the border) Laotian (Vientiane) another

went a few months ago, Full page Visa and cost 1,550 baht I'm English, a Canadian in front of me was charged 1,800 baht.

Yes Canadians pay about the highest visa fees for Laos $42.00 U.S. or 1,800 Bhat, $60 if you pay in Bhat. We do not support the Communist government and hence pay more. Plus a dollar more on weekends or holidays for everyone. "Our country our Tax" on one of the entry forms for Laos.

Mae Sot is an option with bus service. I do not have a recent cost of Myanmar visa but in the past it was 500 baht (they prefer $.) Visa at border is available.

As asiaexpat mentions, you don't need to travel to bkk,, exit/entry details completed at the border crossing,, unsure about costs, but I drove up there with a few friends about 5 months back one of whom was doing the run,,, 15 minutes processing followed by a 10 minute walk over the bridge,,

If travelling to BKK first, Mae Sod is not the nearest border. There are several visa run opperators in BKK that go to Cambodia, which is much closer by.

There is always a number of things to think about... If the OP friend is from UK must think of pages in Passport and cost of Passport...... Cambodia = 2x stamps from Thailand 2x stamps from Cambodia + a full page Visa...... Now a normal UK Passport has 29 sides that can be use, Boarders appear to stamp anywhere, !! even if they put the stamps close together going to Cambodia or Laos, + getting a new '0' = a new passport every 3 years......... Burma and Malaysia = NO full page Visa so just 1/2 a page is used NOT 2 per boarder visit... 1x Multi '0' can do 4x boarder runs.

As for cost of getting to boarder, yes cheapest to get the Casino bus Cambodia, but not a lot extra just over 100 baht for a 1st class bus to Mae Sot, NO full page Visa + 10$ bill or 500 baht, there appears to be 4 Buses per day from BKk so can come back the same day....... Passport last twice as long saving 8,000 baht. on a new passport.

If speed is needed then a Visa Van from BKK, about 9 hours return, cost around 2,000 baht with the Cambodia Visa, or fly to Malaysia get stamps and return on same plane.

As for Ranong, yes further, but cost about the same, have been by Ranong Express Bus, and have driven myself .......... not done but can also go by train to Chumphon and there is a Visa Van from there.5 mins from Train station.
