Another "white lie." Her (or her brother's) government policies are what caused Thai rice to be non-competitive, thus letting India take the lead.

"India has always had a price advantage over Thailand, which sells at a premium in the world market. Last year, the export price of Thai rice ranged between $525 and $575 per tonne. But this year, the price swelled to $660 tonne on the back of the Thai government's high support price to farmers. The government paid farmers 15,000 baht a tonne for 100% white paddy and 20,000 baht for fragrant paddy to fulfill its election promise. This raised the export price of Thai rice, making it non-competitive in global markets. India recently raised its export quota of non-basmati rice from 2 million tonne to 4 million tonne to boost exports further.

"Rice-importing countries got a good alternative in India to expensive Thai varieties. While Indian rice costs $500-$530 per tonne, Thai rice costs $660 per tonne. This has led a surge in demand from countries like Indonesia and other African countries," said Om Prakash Arora, president Punjab-Haryana Rice Broker Association."

"Yingluck also attended a dinner hosted by US President Barack Obama where she spoke briefly with the president on the 180th anniversary of Thai-US diplomatic relations"

Briefly? At a dinner specifically celebrating Thai-US relations? Obama avoiding her?

"She told Obama that Thailand was ready to cooperate with the US as a strategic partner and increase people-to-people relations."

It's too bad NASA is not a person. Strategic....only if China gives permission for said cooperation. Brief? No wonder.

I'm convinced this is just a tourism ploy to get free advertising while trying to show Thailand isn't as bad as you have heard. Yingluck is hoping nobody is listening to foreigners on TV.

I think Obama only gave her a few minutes to see if he could get a Thai lap dance.

So i guess all the bashers think the PM of Thailand should just stay home and not attend a dinner with the President of the US and other world leaders or try and pitch whatever products she can pitch? Would that make all of the thai visa keyboard warriors happy??

Do they actually believe in the verbal vomit they utter day after day, after day, after day? I can't understand that politicians from a country where facesaving is the top priority, jump at every chance they get, to demonstrate their massive incompetence.

Clearly she isn't in the know about the potential effects of climate change - Mainly that agricultural output is expected to fall in tropical and dry countries

Off topic, but in reply to your statement.

Increased CO2 in the atmosphere should theoretically increase crop yields across the world, assuming water is available.

(plants need sunlight, CO2, water and nutrients to grow)

Maybe we all got the wrong message.

Thailand Wants To Be The Kitchen For A Hungry World...

She probably wants to start with the ever hungry pimps in Isan?

Surapong Towichukchaikul said he had invited investors |from Belgium to join in development of the Dawei special economic zone in Myanmar, during a bilateral meeting with his Belgian counterpart Didier Reynders

I wonder if their two personal translators fell in love already whistling.gif

At least if she stayed home she wouldn't embarrass herself. "Other world leaders", Yingluck? That's really a stretch. Yingluck doesn't qualify as a world leader. World leaders come from first world countries, not corrupt third world countries.

Actually, the answer to that is in your statement. The fact that they cannot lose face means nobody can call them imcompetent so they can spew anything they want.

Maybe she can get some lessons from the Chinese: Zhangzhou area ( Xiamen port) for vegetables and fruits, or Guangxi ( Beihai port) to see how real developments have to be.

Vietnam is in the meantime a bigger rice exporter as Thailand.

All other nations are a lot more active as the slow Thai exporters.

10 years more, and .. Thailand will be the kitchen for their own hungry people as all overseas buyers are so fed up with Thai suppliers, ythey are willing to put the workd updside down to find alternatives.

Look at coming food fair: SIAL Paris, 21-25 Oct: 5773 exhibitors of which 983 from China and 155 from Thailand.

Seventeen Thai restaurants in New York received "Thai Select" awards from the prime minister to guarantee their food quality, according to the government website.

Any restaurant wanting to qualify for the "Thai Select" award must use copious amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG) in every dish they make!!

Can you not find something positive to say or is the truth too big to overcome ?

I'm sure she was busy impressing other world leaders...

"Herro, Mr. Plethident... I am Yingruck. I am so glad to be overcome to Amelica. Have you ever been to Thailand? We have many great praces to visit. You should go to Soi Nana. Many beautiful things to see (some are even 15 years old... please don't mention this in your human trafficknig report). And there is yummy seafood to eat (like shrimp cleaned by 9 year old children with adorable small hands made just for cleaning shrimp). And if you aren't 'in the mood', you can always buy Cialis on the street (can you please remove us from the intellectual property violators list?). Let me introduce you to my Foreign Minister (who doesn't speak English better than me)..."
