Thailand Makes Plans For Formula One Race

Logistics would suggest running it either immediately before or after Singapore. Two words. Rainy season.

Can't even begin to imagine the chaos caused by shutting down central BKK for a week.

I for one would love to see F1 in Thailand but on a dedicated track would seem to make much more sense to me.

Protests shut it down for a couple of months, so I imagine a week won't hurt. Anyone living within earshot isn't going to like to though! Still curious to see the proposed route, but pulling 200 on sukhimvit seems doable!

Thailand’s tourism and sports minister, said that the government would cover 60 percent of the total cost, and that the rest would come from commercial deals with sponsors such as the Red Bull energy drink and Singha beer brands.

To which the Red bull family have said, sure"I will consider that, but if you jail my son you can take a hike'. I guess the young man won't be going to jail then!

I think you have just given the 'Red Bull' kid his defense! He was trying out the proposed track!

These clowns are obviously seriously thinking about it as there has been talk about building a dedicated F1 track in Chiangmai, but I think the viability or should I say lack of it caused by the pollution put paid to that idea.

Perhaps they should consider holding it in Phuket all they would have to do is convince the tuk-tuk drivers to allow it?

Ha ha ha - I am stil laughing at all the previous great comments - fabulous. I don't think anywhere else in the world are there three countries this close together and F1 wants a slice. Pay Bernie for the rights, he don't care!!! Then when they realise all the road structures, infrastructures, concrete pylons of the BTS and all the other issues like sunken steel drainage plates, street vendors paying the B. i. B being told they can't operate for a week etc., RedShirts seizing the advantage and blockading Rajaphrasong intersection, all mean the entire area will need rebuilding, the cost to do this steps up the the level of insanity! But that's okay, the right people will use it as an excuse to skim from bloated works contracts.

I can just see it, F1's being flipped after hitting a grate at seed, on their side or wrapped around BTS supports, some hung up in the overhead wires, suspended whilst the driver struggles to release himself from the spaghetti, oh god, stop... I am hurting now... laughter ain't the best medicine...

A night race? So what if it rains and all the electricity supply junction boxes give up the ghost? Blind man's F1? Anyways BKK is halfway there already since Nana, Soi Cowboy and Patpong are already the pits.

Memo to Bernie. Makes sure you get the money first before agreeing to anything.

This plan will go the same way as the various proposed 'Disney themed' water parks which have in the past been 'ear marked' to be built in Pattaya & Hua Hin, and the Bangkok 'eye'.

They should stick to holding golf tournaments and elephant polo, or revamp and maintaining Phuket and Chiangmai zoo's to the standard of Singapore's rain forest zoo, and make it compulsory part of all schools curriculum so that they can visit and be educated on the need for conservation etc.

But that does not involve a quick $ so it wont happen!

One would really hope that with the current economic hardships being faced by Thai people 1.2billion baht could be much better spent on social schemes to support those in need. If it was funded by entirely the private sector this would be a great boost to the local economy as it would bring in tens of thousands of people to the city, I can't understand why all the negativity.

Are there any streets in Bangkok where there's enough room to erect grandstands and a pit area (this is actually a permanent structure in Singapore), and where there aren't lamposts, telegraph poles and overhead wires that would cause a major hazard? And not just one street but enough conjoined streets to create a circuit.

I can only think of the Dusit area that may come close to fitting the bill. Anyone else any ideas?

All the politicians know this will never happen, but there has to be a scam in it somewhere.

Maybe the government will allocate 200 million Baht for a feasibility study or issue some compulsory purchase order on some land that somebody wants to get hold of. There has to be a hidden agenda here. This is the second time that this bogus attempt has hit the front pages.

It just won't happen, for several reasons, for example:

1. Thailand doesn't have the expertise in this sport;

2. No-one is able to deal with the nuances of how the roads can be made available without bringing the capital to a standstill;

3. The fact that a fee has to be paid to stage the event will stick in the craw of most ministers; they would actually be looking to make money out of it themselves, rather than paying for the privilege!

4. The road conditions are simply not good enough!

Sorry for being such a pessimist, but mark my words, this will fall flat!

Just think of all the "work permit" revenue this will generate.

The key is the "60%" tax payer funded part. This will provide the trough from which the many of them will feed until the plan gets scrapped 2-3 years down the road and the taxpayers get shafted for the 60%. Taxpayers stand around gawking at all the dangling spaghetti wiring still hanging at eye level all around and think about the promises 2-3 years before to reengineering all of that for the big race.

Singapore got a night safari......I want one, but bigger!

Singapore got an oversized Ferris wheel.......I want one, but bigger!

Singapore got a Formula One night race.....I want one, but bigger and better!

Comparing Thailand to Singapore and Monaco? Been taking too many of the new Thai Viagra pills!

Not going to happen. Let's just see how Thailand sports pulls themselves out of next month's FIFA Futsal World Cup! That's surely to become the laughing stock of the region. Stadium is not even finished, tickets haven't been put on sale.....anything left out??

How are they planning to hide the overhead electricity/phone lines?

That's either:

1) part of the theme: a night race with street obstacles...noodle carts, stray dogs, overweighted electricity lines, or

2) for additional spectator birds-eye-view seating/swinging

If its the bloody big building i am looking at in korat there is no way it will be finished in time. Fifa is having a youth futsal festival in korat today where my son us playing.

Spoke to one of the fifa coaches this morning. No kids from korat because the korat football goup demanded cash under the table.
