Need Help With Connecting A 3Bb Internet Modem/router Directly To A Wireless Router Via Bridge Mode

luwahn, i'm sorry i quite dont get what you are saying. before using the internet, you need to properly set up your *local* network.

Though I have always looked at it as an automatic means to an 'internet connection', I never thought of my connection (in post #57) as a 'Network'. What other settings do I need to enable to get it to work with the wireless router? And, how would I have internet connection when connected to the wireless router?

as soon as you are connected to a LAN or WAN, you are part of a network. please let's try to make that stuff work before going in every directions, we can discuss all that after, with pleasure.

make sure your PC is configured to get an IP from dhcp server (chose automatic in both case)

and back to 1/

You 'dah man!!

This was the hang up (I believe!). I'll get to work on this shortly! clap2.gifcoffee1.gif

this is supposed to be default so i wouldn't be so sure. if this is OK but you still cant connect, open a command prompt and run ipconfig /all and paste the output here.

Keep that Champagne on ice ... but I think we're on the right track!

The above link was all my default settings (I'm taking in all this knowledge as I go...). Here is my IpConfig display (...had to learn how to access it in Win7 - used it all the time in WinXP!).

please check for IPv4, these are IPv6 settings.

/edit: anyway, you're getting an IPv4 address, gateway is 192.168.1.1, that should be all good.

can you ping 192.168.1.1?

try:

ping 192.168.1.1

at the command prompt

but please check IPv4 settings anyway

ok... did you retry to connect to 192.168.1.1 with firefox?

Yep, once again just a few minutes ago: No dice ... the same 'No can establish FireFox connection' display! sad.png

In addition, I also tried 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 with the same results ....

can you try after doing a hard reset of the router?

can you connect via telnet? open the command prompt, type

pkgmgr /iu:"TelnetClient"

once it's installed, type:

telnet 192.168.1.1

When it rains, it pours....

The Telnet program doesn't seem to be in my Win7 folder, so it can't be installed!

After I flashed its firmware, the wireless router's 2.4 & 5 Mhz indicator lights came on when it was connected to the computer and I had typed in 192.168.1.1 (per your instructs) - even though it resulted in the same ' ...can't establish an internet connection' display.

Didn't luwahn say in an earlier post that his nephew flashed DD-WRT on to the ASUS? If so, perhaps there are some issues with that - wrong version, NVRAM not cleared properly etc. So even a 30/30/30 reset might not work.

But ASUS routers have a failsafe firmware loader built in to the hardware so you can revert to factory firmware or flash DD-WRT again.

I mentioned trying a different web browser because I have seen it happen before that (say) Chrome couldn't connect to DD-WRT but IE could - for some unknown reason.

My 'The Devil' nephew, was somehow lucky enough to have been able to 1st - Get the wireless Asus GUI internet-setting setup GUI to detect (and setup) the wireless Asus router with only a minor setting change (or two - w/o IP changes) in the (3BB) Huawei modem configuration menu - setting changes that I have yet to duplicate. 2nd - With that wireless router setup, he immediately flashed the mfg firmware to DD-wrt with the Asus GUI, but he didn't do all the steps to make a thorough update.

Today, I have spent the whole day trying to get the wireless Asus router 'detected' as well as trying to get a thorough firmware installed.

As Urandom asked, "How could I do it w/o being able to access the wireless router?" In part, thanks to his 'life-saving' and helpful instructions, I have literally had 'flashes' (pun intended) of 'router access' today out of the many attempts I have made.

Though nowhere near totally fixed, I have made progress: my router's 2.4 & 5 Mhz LED lights, now, also light up when I power on the wireless router! Before, only the LAN port and WAN port LED lights would light up.

I'll get back to resolving this tomorrow afternoon!

I still hope you get it to work.

clap2.gifSUCCESS AT LAST!!!

It took these two additional (off-line) days but I finally got to the Asus wireless router setup menu and then got it to detect both my computer and then the 3BB internet connection....Now the everything is connected, detected and running as they are suppose to be! wai2.gif

I believe the root of the problem was my computer's IP network address setup. To be able to successfully open the Asus IP192.168.1.2 \ 192.168.2.1 router configuration page, I had to set my computer's network to a 'static address' to access the website (with my computer connected to the Asus router but w/o the 3BB internet connection). Only then did it detect and allow me to configure everything. I removed the 'static address' settings after the Asus router setup utility completed its configuration with my computer.

I am practically clueless about networking and routers, etc. and that inability to understand the terminologies of and relationships between DNS, Gateways, etc., and differences between the wireless router's parameters and those of the (3BB) modem's really hindered my progress.....but I am especially grateful to 'Urandom' for 'going the extra miles' with me as well as 'Dork' and to 'Robblok' for the incentive as well to everyone else who offered their advice.

And now we all know this Asus RT66U wireless router can run with the 3BB (Huawei MT-880) in bridge mode! (I guess I'll be returning the Asus DSL-N55U wireless (ASDL) router - I purposely didn't open it until I was absolutely convinced that I couldn't get the Asus'66' to connect on its own.

Now is a good time to begin a nice discussion on NAS, VPNs and Networking 101. coffee1.gif

Dork and especially Urandom, really helped me to get 'going', but to keep you from going through all that I had to go through, if you find that your AC66's 'Quick Internet Setup - (QIS)' program isn't immediately detecting your (3bb) modem in its 'Bridge Mode', you will first have to set your computer to a static IP - 192.168.1.1 (I believe those last 2 digits are correct) and type in 192.168.1.2 onto your web browser!

Though this R66U is my first router, I have since learned that our Asus models are real cool 'performance machines'. There is a nice following of users - besides the real techie Tomato and DD-Wrt groups - who continually tweet the firmware to satisfy the myriad of needs of its many users. Our routers are also practically 'Brick-proof' in that you can flash the firmware to your hearts content and need not worry that you blew out your BIOS - I know this, too, from personal experience!

I highly recommend you upgrade your firmware to the 3.0.0.4.246.20 version for your model. It's the latest and most stable firmware version that gives you several additional options.

How will you be using your router?

Let us know how it goes.

Dear Iuwahn

Thank you for the quick response.

From reading this thread, it is clear that there are some seriously informed people about...unfortunately, I am 1 million miles away from being a member of this elite group of individuals. Wouldn't it be nice if the ISP provider staff were also members of this club..... the friendly guy who installed my box was most definitely not!

However, using your post as guidance, I think I may have found myself set up (correctly) and ready to surf the net! I underline the word 'think' because I am not entirely sure how to check if my 3bb sourced modem/router is acting solely as modem! I have the 3bb and Asus router set up as described in the post and I have access to both the 3bb (192.168.1.1) and Asus (192.168.2.1) interface. I have internet access and Wifi is working well.

Would using the CMD DOS 'ipconfig/all' command, help to distinguish this?

With regards to how I am intending to use this nifty piece of kit - It was initially purchased to ensure that I had decent network coverage between a bulky 4 level town house. I do like to try and keep up with technology and would like to be able to stream wireless content from various Wifi enabled machines around the home. As a greater number of products are released with the new AC format my plans will expand. I am trying to future proof my ideas.

Do you have a link to a decent Asus RTac66u website/forum? I would be keen to learn what other features this piece of kit possesses.

Thanks for the tips... best wishes

It looks like you have connected back onto the internet and on your first try!

Now, type in 192.168.1.2 and you should be at your Asus GUI menu. Try that and let me know!

It also sounds like we may be 2 peas-in-a-pod when it comes to the level of 'router(netwrk?)' informity.

Correcting the previous post:

You got it configured right! You have connected back onto the internet and on your first try!

That is the Asus GUI menu at 192.168.2.1. (192.168.1.2 works, too!)

It also sounds like we may be 2 peas-in-a-pod when it comes to the level of 'router(netwrk?)' informity.

About your, 'I like to try and keep up with technology', thought, the 'powers to be' got smart and played a sly trick on us who have the same intentions: The (early) release of the 'AC' models: There are no devices presently with the AC standard to connect to these AC routers! When the AC devices finally do come onto the market, you can believe that these 1st generation AC routers won't be up to the standard of the 'newly released' AC devices.....and we consumers can only hope that a firmware update will be the only requirement to bring these 1st generation AC routers up to the standard of the 'newly released devices' as well as the 2nd generation of matching AC routers!
