Thai Defence Minister: Security for Thaksin under Myanmar authorities

BANGKOK, Nov 5 - Thai Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said he has not been informed of a possible assassination attempt against convicted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra who is to visit Myanmar this week , but he said it is the responsibility of the Myanmar authorities to provide security for him.

Gen Sukumpol made his remark as Mr Thaksin's son, Panthongtae Shinawatra, revealed on his Facebook page that there is a plot to assassinate his father when Mr Thaksin visits Myanmar Thursday through Saturday this week.

The defence minister said he has no details of the plot, but emphasised that security measures for the ousted ex-premier are the responsibility of the Myanmar authorities, not Thai security agencies.

Regarding the seizure of smuggled military weapons at the Thai-Myanmar border province of Tak ahead of Mr Thaksin’s visit, Gen Sukumpol said this should not be linked with the ex-premier’s presence across the border.

Thai military authorities in the border town of Mae Sot on Sunday arrested a Karen woman when her pickup passed a checkpoint carrying weapons, including five assault rifles, an M60 heavy machine gun, and 10,400 rounds of ammunition while another Karen man, who drove the car, managed to escape from the arrest.

Arrest warrant has been issued for the man who is still at large.

Both suspects were charged with illegal possession of war weapons. Police believe the seized arms are destined for the neighbouring country, but it is unclear whether they were destined for a particular group.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said Monday he was not informed of a possible assassination plot against Mr Thaksin, and that he has not spoken with the fugitive ex-premier for a long time. (MCOT online news)

The old assassination attempt again.

Anything to keep in the news.

While he is in Myanmar why doesn't Thaksin come into Thailand.

After all he has the government, police, UDD and Red Shirtd in his pocket so he has to be safe.

I just remembered he has told the whole world that he cannot return.

Actually he can return at any time but as a convicted fugitive and that will force the government to arrest him.

Of course if he does come over and is not arrested..................................

I doubt taking guns and munitions across the border is of any necessity. After all Burma is one of the most armed countries in Asia. If someone wants to pop a cap in Thaksin's ass, it should be easy to obtain a weapon and that would do us all a favour.

Again? Last time in Laos there were these rumours as well. No problems in Cambodia of course, eternal friend Hun Sen has all under control like no other tongue.png

He is correct, it is not the responsibility of Thai authorities to protect him in Burma. It is their responsibility to seek his extradition so they can put him in prison where he belongs.

Another trick to keep Thaksin in the media.... Assassination plot now!

If he really were in that great danger, he would duck somewhere far from it. He is such a coward that he would not leave his shelter if things were not 1000% secure

He will wait to see the crowd numbers before he ducks out due to assasination threats, as per Laos.

Exciting isn't it? Wonder if he'll get anywhere close to Boonlert's attendance.
