Featured Replies

Just as the topic title says.......It's Approaching High Season in Thailand....What's Your Do's and Don'ts For First Time Visitors?

There is no one more expert on life in Thailand than you guys, ( and ladies ), so what would you say to the novice traveller to Thailand?

Rule number one. Don't get serious about sex partners until you have known them for a LONG time and have seen what they are really like.

DO's: Enjoy all the bars and all the girls as far as your holiday money takes you...

DONT: don't get married on your first evening... wait until you are sure it IS a girl and then wait until you see her in morning without make-up...

Keep your wits about you and enjoy yourselves! Realize that what you have heard in your home countries through the media is the dark side; bad news is good news and all that good stuff!

The above said, you have heard the bad things so when you end up in downtown Patong, Nana or Walking Street, don't complain about it, just move on if you don't like it.

And I have heard that temple tours for your entire holiday are highly over-rated..............thumbsup.gif

Oh, and don't drink the water from the taps!

As for the Adult stuff, i'll leave that to the older more experienced members.

Stay away from red shirt....

Don't come to Thailand and tell everyone how nice it is in your home country. If we wanted to go there we would.

Don't write 15 threads about why you are leaving Thailand, just leave quietly and don't let the door hit you.

Don't tell everyone in the world you didn't meet your woman in a bar. We don't believe you and if we do we don't care.biggrin.png

There are only 5 people in Thailand who mind being called Farang if you want to make it 6 please don't write a book about it; its been done.

There are too many that think a LONG time is 1 hour

DO: Enjoy the beautiful beaches and the sunshine

DON'T: Don't get a horrible sunburn on your first day... of course, unless you are British... seems to be a "must do" for them tongue.png

What about your 4 do's?

Hear, hear! thumbsup.gifbiggrin.png

Don't get bothered by old fat guys with the little spinners on their arms.

Find someone who speaks reasonable Thai and your language to go along and get off the beaten track where foreigners are rarely seen and A/C unheard of. Spread a little money around sponsoring some parties for the locals, crash a few weddings or something, let loose and party with a bunch of salt-of-the-earth Thais. The little islands at the midway stops of the regular local ferry service between the islands off Krabi and Phuket are good candidates, but do pack your mozzie repellant.

Don't get all stressed about paying a bit more than the locals for stuff, as long as it's still a lot cheaper than back home not worth raising your blood pressure over.

Have a scan through the threads here and pay attention to some of the stuff that gets repeated over and over again. But whatever you do don't take it all as gospel - except my posts of course 8-)

Wrap up your tool if you are going to use it.

2. Learn how to cook Thai food.

3. Learn who to wai.

4. Learn something about the culture before you come.

Oh, come on... if they do and don't what you say, it will kill all fun and learning they can have as first time visitors...

And furthermore... they will never have the chance to become Senior Thaivisa Consultants claiming "I speak from personal experience"

E :Don't rent a motorbike unless you're proficient .

And even if proficient make sure you have proper insurance - read the fine print.

You forgot about the Do's Charlie? sad.png

Do try the local food

Do visit some temples and other cultural sites

Do make an effort to learn the language

Do bargain when out shopping in markets

Don't take up any tuk tuk drivers offer to take you to a temple

Don't take up any offer from a tout to see a bar for a show

Don't drink tap water

Don't flush toilet paper down the bogs

Don't believe the site you want to see "is closed today"....and don't let the tuk tuk mannie take you to a "good alternative"

Do remember to smile. Thailand is the Land of Smiles....but don't look like a grinning idiot.

Don't skimp on the showers....thai people don't like smelly farang

Do try different thai foods

Don't assume that a girl with a tattoo is a bar girl (SORRY..... Someone had to say it... whistling.gif )

Don't be afraid of Thailand, but do keep your wits about you.

Do look for the adam's apple, big hands and deeper voice. Don't be surprised if you didn't!!!!!

Don't be afraid to come on Thaivisa and tell us all about your former life as a multi-millionaire ex-SAS/SEAL. (But do remember you'll get flamed...we are ALL multi.... etc etc)

AND LASTLY....(hooray!).....

Don't tink too mutt.

Don't hassle The King.

Don't get in a fight with a Thai.

Do sample the delectable local delights.

Stay away from red shirt....

Do postpone your holiday till low season

Dont talk about politics in Thailand, or TV.

Dont leave your common sense in the departure lounge.

Do ring the bell in every bar you can....its rude not to in Thai eyesthumbsup.gif

Don't leave your bag with your return ticket, room key, passport, money, travellers checks and credit cards on the bar when you go dancing even if someone volunteers to watch it for you, the result will not be very pleasing.

Do bring me some P.G Tips, Heinz salad cream and Bisto gravy powder.

Don't walk around topless, even if you are an Adonis.

If it all starts to go pear-shaped:

Smile

Drop your shoulders, bow your head slightly and say (better transliterations welcome) "Khawt Tawd Khrap/Ka (depending on sex)"

Know your place and live to try again, you really can't read these people on your first visit....I don't care how far you've traveled.

Enjoy and don't be too serious about it all....most things WILL work out for the best if you follow the above.
