There is a topic in Pattaya forum HERE that might help you

Any fermented veggies...sauerkraut, kim chee, etc. Most of the stuff sold here though is heavily laden with MSG. Better to make your own sauerkraut or other pickled, fermented food. Subscibe to Dr. Mercola's daily newsletter and educate...don't medicate.

Foodland's got pretty decent sauerkraut, own-brand in a jar not the canned crap. I like to cook it with some cut up apples and pork or sausages let it simmer for a while, yummy.

I'm hoping to find something a little more universal. I live in Nakhon Si Thammarhat and don't make another trip to BKK until January, then hopefully I can get something to use as a starter.

I really notice the difference, being off probiotics. Not a good one, either.

Yakult and the like.

I haven't tried it but I would bet the Thai Yakult products are heavily SUGARED. Oh well ...

Which might actually be beneficial to organisms, if I'm not mistaken.

(That's or-ga-nisms; there's that extra "n" in there. But who knows, maybe ... ?)

The discoveries in the natural medicine world the last two years are profound. The importance of your gut fauna and getting the proper sunshine (vitamin D) are second to none when health issues are studied. Good to see someone else on TV that understands this.

Yoghurt is a probiotic also.

Indeed. Make sure the label says Live Active Cultures which IS available in Thailand, even without sugar.

What's the brand name of this yougurt?

Sugar in any form is never beneficial to humans. Sugar is one of cancers favorite foods. The best way to the yoghurt is to send for some proper culture (Amazon) and make your own greek yoghurt. Simple to make.

You could buy some EM (Effective micro-organisms) available in farm supply shops. Usually used in animal feed, but I've made a type of wine from it and fruit before and very good :D (Mix EM:raw sugar: water 1:1:100) Ferment 10 days, exclude air, but allow any CO2 to escape. You may get a white fungii on top, no worries, that is good.

Also available in Do Home stores, I liter about 70 Baht, they have smaller bottles as well.

micro-organisms die at temperature exceeding 35 deg C

And for all of you that take advice from doctors in Thailand, every time you take antibiotics you're committing mass species-cide on all these good guys. I've got a hypochondriac friend here that probably goes through half a dozen courses in an average year. . .

Do you have to pinch your nose when you drink it sick.gif or is your wine worthy of the Rothschild label? burp.gif

Sounds interesting, I'd like to know the strain(s) and if they are beneficial to the human gut. Maybe using it as a starter in some other food?

No need to pinch my nose :D

EM contains

Photosynthetic bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas spp)

Lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus spp)

Yeast (Saccharomyces spp)

Google those and I think that you will find them beneficial to the human gut, especially the Lactic acid bacteria

The photosyhthetic bacteria consume organic matter and harmful; gases and produce amino acids, sugars etc

Lactic acid, you already know about

Puzzled me at first, then I noticed Nakhon Si Thammarhat in the quoted post
