Hello Guies,

I am thinking to buy some electronic things from a chinese website for a total of approx 300USD. They will ship it via EMS or DHL.

Does anyone has experience with that? How much custom duty/ taxes do you think I will need to pay upon arrival in Thailand?

Thanks smile.png

Someone who never paid duty with EMS is a possibility but DHL? NO frigging way. Unless, it was something untaxable which is highly doubtful (some people even pay duty on packages from their homecountry, eg. used clothes)

UPS and other express shipping services cut 30% duty and 7% VAT as standard. Good thing is chinese dealers usually wrote 30% percent of value to the invoice so your duty comes to a 10% percent instead of 30.

Normally you don't pay any duty or vat with EMS, but it is up to the post office's random check. If you got unlucky, they will check your package, find out real value of items (china = 3x of invoice) and cut 10 percent duty plus 7 percent vat from you.

As you can see EMS is much more affordable and there is a high chance you'll not pay any dime.

It arrives in min 5 days, usually 6 days after its shipped from China to Bangkok.

SO the duty is actually supposed to be 10% plus 7%? I'm thinking of importing some furniture from China.

Thanks any website with references would be appreciated

You don't plan to import furniture by EMS or UPS/DHL/Fedex right? You should check thai customs website for duty rates. You may need a customs dealer (don't know what to call them in English) to help you get past the customs clearance, which maybe costly.

UPS cuts 30% duty you say???! On which ground? Are they claiming that it is their fee for custom brokerage?

I mean 10% + 7% I can understand if it is the custom tariff and VAT for Thailand by Law. But 30% on no legal ground, it sounds like a big rip-off to me... Anyone else got experience with UPS even for things coming from other countries?

By the way thanks all for your comments and info thumbsup.gif

thailand is crazy about their tariffs, have a look http://igtf.customs.go.th/igtf/en/main_frame.jsp the only electronic devices at low rates are webcams and telephone (5%) for the rest 30% is really the minimum.

one exemple is speakers are taxed(tariff) at 60%

Guys, import duty is variable according to the product or at least type of product. Each type of product has a different import duty %. Look at the import duty on vehicles or alcohol (80% and more). Regarding VAT it is 7% no matter what.

What is generally true (in my experience) is that if the seller evaluates the product below 150 USD the Thai customs will let it pass. Probably paperwork related.

DHL/FEDEX or whatever the company is irrelevant. What matters is the value.

  • 2 months later...
Where can i find a list of these items that I want to import?say I want to buy in China and send to Thailand.?

Actually I'm trying to import a nespresso CitiZ single brew espresso maker into Thailand. Here they charge more than double what you'd pay in the states, malaysia, or Japan.

Thank you

This Agreement shall apply to all manufactured products, - including capital goods,

processed agricultural products, and those products failing outside the definition of agricultural

products as set out in this Agreement. Agricultural products shall be excluded from the CEPT

Scheme. You should have paid between 0-5% in tariff plus VAT is this correct?

Thank you
