Exchanging English £50 Bank Notes In Pattaya

A friend will be arriving in LOS and staying in Pattaya. He intends bringing English £50 notes with him.

The older pre-2011 notes with Sir John Houblon on the reverse side.

Have any members experienced difficulties exchanging such notes in Pattaya especially at the independent money changers?

NOTE to Moderator - I've placed a similar thread in the Money/Banking forum but I felt this may be also relevant in the Pattaya forum

Older currency versions will not be generally accepted.

The Houblon £50 note is valid In Uk, but most currency exchangers do not have the validation checks for old notes and the fact that they can and will eventually be withdrawn with only 3 months notice by Bank of England.

OP, if you already have reservations regarding exchanging the pre-2011 50 pound notes in Pattaya, why don't you just tell your friend to exchange them for the newer version before leaving for LOS? Or why hasn't he thought of that? Rather curious......

Assuming the notes are genuine, I don't see a problem exchanging them at Bank Gold, Soi Rungland, just off Pattaya Tai and just east of 3rd Rd. They also tend to give a slightly better exchange rate than the more, "tourist" exchange booths towards the beach / central Pattaya.

Agree with the first point and as mentioned in the other thread almost certain they will be rejected after my experience with some $100 bills on two separate occasions.

As to the actual exchange I would not use any bank in preference to one of the specialists who give a better rate - EG TT Exchange (shop fascias have a yellow band with TT Exchange in black on it) or if he is going to be in BKK first then Superich. Do a search to find many threads on this.

Topt, I've used Bank Gold to exchange numerous currencys after returning from overseas holidays and work assignments. I can assure you they are specialists in exchanging money, not a typical bank.

They may be an exception and to be fair I have never looked at their rates. Would be interesting to compare their current £ rate to say the TT Exchange shop rate at the same time to get a comparison. If I remember I will have to look at it next time I am there.

Pormax. I don't think you are right there. My Exchange guy in Pattaya Tai (just before Wat Chai) has has me specifically to bring him GBP £50 notes Sterling. He gives a good rate : equally as good at TT Exchange Shops. It is the small notes they abhore GBP Fivers and Tenners.

If the guy obtained his money from a kosher legal source, I would strongly recommend that he goes to a bank and changes the whole lot for crisp new 20 pound notes and he will never have any trouble exchanging them almost anywhere in Thailand.

If necessary, he can give the bank advance notice to order them in for him.

I really fail to see why he wants to bring old notes to Thailand - unless I have missed the answer somewhere in this threadsad.png

Bank Gold will not accept them, they have a sign up saying so, sorry.

I had a few and eventually found the exchange at the front of Viila Supermarket would take them.

Well that gives the guy some hope. When I came to live in Thailand I didn't bring Fifty Pound notes as I previously lived in Cyprus. On a trip before my last I bought over a substantial amount of Euros in 500 Euro notes and though I did in the end get an exchange place to take them I had been turned down by others and the reason they gave for this is that they were wary of forgeries. The last time I only bought over 100 Euro notes and not a problem.
