A school director was fatally shot near her school as she was driving to a funeral in Pattani's Nong Chik district yesterday.

PATTANI: -- Nuntana Kaewchan, 51, of Banta Kamcham School was shot in the face and torso. She was taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries there.

Police said Nuntana was driving her car to the funeral of a police officer. She was about 100 metres from her school when two men hiding near a fence emerged and sprayed the car with bullets. The gunmen then escaped into the nearby bush.

Five bullet casings from an M16 rifle and 15 spent shells from a 9mm pistol were found at the scene, police said.

After the attacks, Banta Kamcham and other nearby schools abruptly suspended classes. Soldiers escorted teachers and students to prevent more attacks.

Nuntana is the 154th school employee to fall victim to violence in the South.

Yet another useless loss of a life in the service of others taken by scum how have no moral or social concience and to all intent and purpose, no cause. Sadly it will continue owing to the fact that the Government do not have the balls to act decisively and the police and military do not have the capability.

Can not understand why none of the international media have not taken a more active role. Whether this Government wishes to accept or not ,the fact is that the southern provinces are in a state of civil war.

Simply calling it the "restive south" is like calling the Normandy Landings, a day on the beach.

The Benz may a family car. It might be from her husband. At any rate the car is not the point of the thread.

My condolences to the friends, family and students.

Do these idiots not want their children educated? RIP to the school director.

Guess these idiots don't want to have their kids educated in a Thai school. They want this part of the country.

R.I.P.

(((just wondering how she can afford to drive a Benz with the low salaries in the education sector!?!)))

Irrelevant comment, but for information, senior staff in Thai schools (headmistresses/masters) get paid 70,000 to 100,000 Bt a month; and huge LOANS are almost pushed on government and municipal teachers because the repayments are deducted and sent to the bank before the remainder is made available to the borrower. Loans to teaching staff of multiple millions are not uncommon.

They will continue with this cowardly crap until they get what they want: Schools and businesses closed on Fridays.

Unfortunately the other locals down there will continue to suffer because that's not going to happen - nor should it.

Loss of innocent life is the 'price of freedom' ...... it sucks.

So sad to see the demise of people who dedicate their lives to educating others and being taken out by ignorant scum.

Not to justify this crime or disrespect victims of violence down South, but...

None of the directors of schools I've seen here have "dedicated their lives to educating others..."

It's more like a business investment, they pay as much as several million Baht for the position, and in exchange they get steady returns on tuition, profits from construction projects given to "friendly" firms (those that pay a healthy enough "contribution" to the director), etc.

Just like in many schools in Pathet Falang - educational authorities, teachers' unions, etc., tend to get in the way of education.
