Builders Around Chumphon

Does anyone have first hand experience of builders in the Chumphon area? I want to get prices to build a new house in Thung Wua Laen, I know a couple of people who can help supervise but cannot be there my self. I have over 40 years of construction experience and want to make sure I use as builder who will work with me and build what my wife and I want.

Have you had a look at any finished homes? Not many posters on here from Chumphon.

My suggestion will be to have a look at some of the finished properties & get some names.

top of soi 7 at thung wua laen(pirate cafe is beach end of soi 7) there are 3 houses getting built by the thai couple who own 4 townhouses and 4 villas in same street,very nice couple ex teachers and look after their tenants very well.I would suggest talking to them,they have been in this area for a long time and i would think any builder they used would be ok.

There ph number is on the for rent signs in the street,if you know the area,its where all the western couples live.

Hi Steve, mate I was in the building trade for 40 odd years and to say I was shocked by the standards here is an understatement. No tradies as such, mum, dad, kids all do the work so nothing is square/level, wiring is usually bad as is all the plumbing and the painting leaves a lot to be desired to say the least. No matter who you get to do it you will need to be watching over/supervising them constantly or it will never be what you want, another thing to remember is that the gyprock/dry wall they do here is not real good, they dont use top coat(finishing compound) at all so all the joins stand out, tape used is very narrow and when finished they usually paint the ceilings grey so you dont see all the joins due entirely to the colour variance of the board & joint compound. I had to get my painters to do 2 sealers and 2 finish coats to get the ceiling to look white, also make sure you get the painters to block/sand the walls(and any other painted surface, frames, doors, windows etc) and remove the power point covers, light shades, door handles etc before painting or they are just painted around/over very roughly, scary stuff. I am only a couple of hours down the road in Surat Thani and I know there are no good quality builders in this region at all from what I have seen, they are all just labourers from Myanmar

Thankyou for your response, I am aware of the pitfalls with construction having been living with a Thai lady for 16 years and had many trips over. I am a construction Site Manager in Australia with over 40 years experience. I am really looking for recommendations from some one with knowledge of the area. I have had plans drawn up by a friend in Hua Hin to lodge. Unfortunately I am not able to supervise the work on a permanent basis. I have met a few well meaning farangs who have offered to "supervise" the work for me.

I am concerned with the integrity of the structure and with the wiring. I am a carpenter / joiner by trade so I know the standard that I want to achieve but am aware of the standard I may be expected to accept!! Hopefully there is ahappy medium.

I have a great sparky locally in Surat Thani but it is 2 hours drive there from here but I can recomend him after watching him rewire our house, he is thorough and does it by the book. If you are interested let me know and I will get contact details for you, just pm me.
