I'd say that most Thai people don't know.

I believe it to be the anniversary of when the first monks gathered to listen to Lord Buddha, but not sure if this was the incident in the Deer park in Sarnath, India.

I've been to Sarnath - one of the holy Buddhist sites in India. When I tell Thai people this they have never heard of it. Most have heard of Lumpini, and one or two of Bodh gaya.
