Prisoners go 'Gangnam Style'

The Nation

30195183-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- 'Gangnam Style', the most-watched video on YouTube, is even a hit in Thai prisons, where the Corrections Department held a contest using the hit song by South Korean rapper 'Psy'.

Teams of inmates signing up for the contest could choose to copy the "Gangnam Style" horse dance, as seen in the music video.

Or, the teams could dance freestyle.

Corrections Department director-general Suchart Wongananchai said the event was held to encourage inmates to exercise more and relieve stress.

Finalist teams were chosen from seven prisons.

The rewards for the "Gangnam Style" and freestyle winners were a trophy cup and consumer goods.

The winner in the "Gangnam Style" dance-off was the Ngorngar Team, headed by an inmate named Jes. He said his 10-member squad had never danced before, so they watched the music video and practised Psy's moves every afternoon for several weeks.

"Everyone cooperated very well," Jes said. "We felt proud to win the contest."

Tunnel of lights in Ratchaprasong for New Year's Celebration

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- A tunnel of colourful LED lights will decorate the Ratchaprasong intersection during the festive season, and is expected to attract 16 million tourists and Bt13 billion in revenues to the area, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announced yesterday.

Manit Techa-apichoke, BMA deputy permanent secretary, said the festival of lights will run from Saturday December 1 to January 12, with the LED lights festooning the road, the BTS Skywalk and pedestrian overpasses in the area around the Gaysorn shopping centre.

The tunnel of light, 20 metres long and 16 metres wide, will be turned on nightly from 5.30 to 11.30 but on New Year's Eve, the lights will stay on until 2am.

In addition, there will be performances by artists and musicians on Saturday as well as on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

"There are many famous hotels and malls in the Ratchaprasong area. His Majesty the King's birthday, Father's Day, Christmas and New Year's are special events that people and tourists will come to celebrate and glorify," Manit said.

The BMA expects that the light display will attract more than 16 million Thai and foreign tourists, who will spend Bt13 billion in the area.

Hotel occupancy there is expected to be at 90 per cent, Manit said.

Loy Krathong in Hat Yai lively; 30 mln expected in circulation.

SONGKHLA, Nov 28 - The Loy Krathong festival's ambience in Hat Yai today is lively, with Bt30 million revenue is expected to circulate.

Songkhla Tourist Industry Association chairman Somchart Pimtanapunporn said Malaysian tourists started slowing into the area before the Loy Krathong festival, for it was already a school holiday in Malaysia.

Room reservations in Hat Yai have been about 80 per cent booked for the festival, which is a satisfactory figure, he said, given that the day has not fallen on a weekend.

Security measures are well prepared for safety in Hat Yai municipality, with defence volunteers, special task force officials, and a civic network to monitor the situation round the clock.

Provincial police ordered strict measures imposed on checkpoints in both inner and outer Hat Yai, while stationing personnel at places where Loy Krathong activities are held. (MCOT online news).
