A senior government official has reportedly agreed to help students from a Mandalay college for ethnic minorities, who had been protesting against a planned transfer to Sagaing, a town 20 km away from Mandalay, The Myanmar Times reports. About 500 students from the Nationality Youth Resource Development Degree College in Mandalay demonstrated during the weekend and Minister for Border Affairs Lt Gen Thein Htay met with demonstrators on Monday. Students said afterwards that he had agreed to allow them to stay in Mandalay campus for one month and that a resolution would be found within a few weeks.
