The director of the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime, Yury Fedotov, met with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and Vice-President Dr. Sai Mauk Kham in Naypyidaw on Saturday to pledge UN support for Burma’s reforms, a UN press release said. Fedotov said UNODC would support measures to curb corruption and the drug trade and to help resolve ethnic conflicts. He said Burma needs to develop strong government institutions to deal with corruption, adding that it should ratify the UN Convention against Corruption “as soon as possible.†In October, UNODC warned that opium production in Burma had risen for a sixth consecutive year.
