Eatery found stocking contaminated fish

CHIANG MAI: -- The Public Health Office in Chiang Mai said yesterday that initial tests of food samples taken from a barbecue restaurant showed that the fish it was stocking was contaminated, and that more food samples were under examination.

The restaurant is being checked for contamination after a customer died from streptococcus bacteria infection. Reports show that the 25-year-old graduate student fell ill after eating at the restaurant with her friends on November 15 and died on November 23.

Dr Surasing Wisarutrat, deputy chief of the health office, said she possibly developed the infection from eating undercooked meat. He said other factors also needed to be considered in this case, such as the woman's health condition, because her friends did not fall ill. He said the case should be concluded soon, adding that the office would conduct a close inspection of the barbecue restaurant ahead of the high tourist season.

Chiang Mai Mayor Tassanai Buranupakorn said he had spoken to health officials and urged them to inspect and educate restaurateurs about maintaining hygienic conditions in the kitchen to prevent a reoccurrence of such issues.

Dont think a death is going to get in the way of business,

Why the Public Health Dept does not name this restaurant,

is beyond belief.

Could it be Puffer fish that seems to get on the market and

into the food chain, but is illegal to sell? we will never know !

Moo gataw is fun, but it would never be allowed in the west, due to the fact that there is no control over how well the customers cook their own food. I am amazed that this type of story is not more common. You should assume all raw meat is potentially harmful, cook it well, and don't eat with the same chopsticks that touch the raw meat.

Interesting that the restaurant is not named and/or the exact location disclosed. I just finished reading the thread about the woman who jumped from a Jomtien balcony, and her full name as well of the names of her husband and stepmother, and the building name with the room number were all published. I often notice that the full address of murder/accident victims is published, along with the funeral information, practically giving burglars a written invitation and directions to a sure-to-be-empty residence.

But, alert the public to a restaurant that serves undercooked, contaminated fish? Heck, no.

This is food safety 101. Identify the name of the restaurant to the public, in case someone else is ill, watch as all contaiminated food is destroyed, watch as the entire restaurant is santitized, and a complete and total health inspection before allowing it to reopen. A restaurant does not always know that it has received bad product, and should want to do anything to quickly resolve the situation to make sure that no one else becomes ill. Where is the accountability here? Who is protecting the public, and why are they not doing their job?

Food Safety 101 also prohibits dogs peeing into the dish rinse water which sits in plastic buckets at ground level. The conditions for this scenario are everywhere at thousands of restaurants in Thailand, and I've observed the dastardly act at least once.

Food Safety and health laws are one thing. Enforcement is an entirely different matter. For me, I vote with my feet.

this country is <deleted> the way they handle these things . as long as the officials get their money , who will give a sh*t.

Yes would agree there

But coud be any number of reasons

* Non fresh fish = hard to detect amongst aromuose of others cooking & bad lighting

* half cooked fish

But at the end of the day it comes down to the owners providing the best quality

? Wander if their family & employees were eating the same products

Barbecue death probed in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- The Public Health Office in Chiang Mai yesterday said the test result of food samples taken from a barbecue restaurant linked to a 25-year-old graduate student’s death from streptococcus group B bacteria infection, showed streptococcus contamination.

The test result, however, found it was a different type from the one that killed the student.

The student fell ill after eating at the restaurant with her friends on November 15 and died on November 23.

Dr Surasing Wisarutrat, deputy chief of the health office, said the bacteria found in the food samples could be dangerous to pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic ailments, organ-transplant recipients or chemotherapy patients.

He also noted that the food sample was taken four days after the incident. Authorities would continue to probe where the killer bacteria came from and consult related experts in the investigation.

As for three other streptococcus patients hospitalised around the same time, Surasing said the initial inquiry found that two of them had eaten raw pork, so the office would collect pork samples from markets for testing.

If they are so unconcerned with their health that they eat raw pork, It is very unlikely they will ever find a definite cause of what made them sick.
