Any bag big enough to contain your kit.

Also prepare for mosquitoes.

Orthodox teaching will tell you not to become attached.

The reality is that you have valuable little time on retreat.

To spend most of it attempting to overcome the tyrrany of mosquito attacks is a resource not wisely spent.

I use the following to protect from bites:

Thick socks to cover feet and ankles.

Sarong to drape over the head and around the neck.

Long sleeved tops and long pants/trousers.

Mosquito repellant (Preparations weth Deet kill and go against ones commitment not uphold the five precepts).

Mosquito head net.

Mosquitoes and other blood-feeding flies (such as black flies and deer flies) are attracted to hosts by skin odors and carbon dioxide from their breath. When a mosquito gets close to a host, DEET and some other repellents jam the insect's sensors and confuse the insect so it is unable to land and bite the host successfully.

DEET does not actually kill mosquitoes, it just makes them unable to detect us.

Thanks for clearing that up SJ.

I found the locally available citronella based preparations extremely ineffective.

lemon grass oil spray is the best against moskitos.- no side effect. And beer (outside). My experience in the jungle.

I agree, and so do most laboratory trials.

Correct. The Officer at the local Health Station told me the same.

I investigated :

"Autan" has serious side-effects on the skin and does'nt work

"Nordic Summer" of Finland where they have a trillion more "mozzies" than in Thailand seems to be useful.

(One problem, moskitos fly away, humans too, smell of rotten meat)

Beer inside by the sweat, beer outside better, but the best actually is brewer's yeast.

"Bushman" Heavy Duty - 80% Deet is excellent.

Where to buy.?

I used it last June at Wat Suan Mokkh.

The mozzies buzzed around, but not one bite.

The previous year my feet, ankles, neck, & ears took a number of very itchy bites.

The year before, at the Suan Mokkh museum tour a poor lady wearing a backless top had a number of very nasty looking red lumps on her neck and back from bites.

It only takes one carrying maleria or an exotic virus and you might be out of action for a year or two.

mungkali.com

is a chinese clinique in Chiang Mai. Malaria problems, they have good information, and working medicine..

I have a good cooperation with this clinique. I buy my acupuncture needles and some special teas there.

For malaria it's not recommended to go to high class hospitals, you loose money, but not malaria.

The malaria-stations and some specialized doctors have more knowledge and experience.
