Most days a female cat comes onto my drive.

Lat week she dug a very small hole between the wire mesh on the garden and the concrete of the drive. This hole measures about 2 inch * 1 inch and abut 2 inches deep.

Most days she will sit by this hole, looking into it, or lie down with her ears pointed at the hole, as if listening to something. She mews a lot whilst doing this. She will do this for well over an hour.

I can see nothing untoward in the hole only soil and some gravel.

She also mews at me each time I go out onto the drive, though she stays by the hole most of the time and is not bothered by my being there watching her..

The other evening she brought a geko to the patio doors and played with it for about 10 minutes, as if she was bringing a gift.

Today she lay by the patio doors mewing at me. I went out and gave her a fuss. I tried to give her chicken and water but she refused both. I left the door open to see if she wanted to enter the house but she stayed outside by the open door looking at us in the house and mewing occasionally.

She is well fed, not on heat, and is very friendly towards me.

This house has always had dogs before I moved in and it is not her home.

Any ideas on this odd behaviour?

I hesitate to say this because the described behavior can be viewed as just cute and intriguing. However, animals performing ritualistic - repeated behavior can have a biological root. A prime suspect would be an internal parasite - brain parasite... Such a parasitic infection in the brain can act similarly to a small brain tumor. The physical pressure on brain tissue or a chemical byproducts of the parasite, can cause changes in brain chemistry - when in turn can cause odd and even repeated animal behaviors...Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic infections in cats. Just google and read the many studies.

Your cat is manipulating you. Our household is organised around her majesty's wishes here. Be a man and impose yourself.

Totally agree. I also have "village cats" in my garden and I never let them get the better of me! (Much)

No, not getting the better of you too much, I can see that laugh.png

I have to admit I do have a soft spot for the loveable little creatures and this one that is coming to the house.

Cats are sometimes thought to be seeing ghosts because they stare fixedly at a point on the wall or some such. Actually their sense of hearing is much more acute than ours, some animal is squeaking there. I hate it when our cat ravages geckos, but she does eat them pretty quick.

Well, shes not your cat. Perhaps she wants to be your cat.

There is something in the hole. Maybe you can't see it but she can hear it. Could be a snake.

That seems logical - regards hearing something in the hole she has made.

Now I have two cats taken to sleeping on my driveway just outside the patio doors. I have to smile to myself when I walk outside as they lift their heads slightly, see it is me and then they go back to sleep almost instantly. They are not at all bothered. Not that I would harm them anyway. I quite like cats and love their independent ways.

At least they do not use my small garden and patio as a toilet since I put down wire mesh on the garden itself and along the fence and drive gate - but I do believe that was small dogs and not cats that used the place as a toilet..

We were adopted, and she lived with us for 7 years. We have 2 of her last batch with us (2 Toms) + 1 other that was dumped on our land by the house. I kicked her out 6 times, in the end I just accepted my fate.

You are very lucky to have the cat come to live at your house. People don't have cats, cats have people. This one seems to have picked you, so I think you are indeed very lucky.biggrin.png
