I'm just about to do my one yearly extension again. Last year I had forgotten about the map requirement so when I fronted at the Pong Nam Ron office they asked me for one. They said it had to be from their office to our home (about 40ks). I drew what I thought was a rough but acceptable free hand on a sheet of A4, roughly to scale, obviously not including all curves etc, but denoting the roads by number and the turns onto different roads.

The officer laughed when I produced it to her and good naturedly drew one of her own which unfortunately and probably stupidly I did not get a copy of. It was a not to scale drawing showing the main road as a thick shaded straight line and only the one one turn off (there are 4) also as a thick shaded straight line to the house and in no way to scale.

I can print a google map, the only problem is being 40 kilometres we are not quite on the same screen, should I try this or just go with my own version of the above. The main reason I ask is that though they are quite helpful usually, sometimes there are a couple of male officers that are pretty brusque.

For my last extension application(Dec 2012) I furnished a Google map showing the directions from CW Immigration to my Muban plus a map of the Muban with my house identified (hand drawn.) They accepted both.

Thai's have a thing about maps. Where the OP, like others more familiar with using maps, thinks that accuracy with curves and approximations of distance is the purpose of a map, the Thai's will reduce that to simple, 'you are here, we are there' maps without inferring terrain or distance (but probably a lot of verbal support such as 'near Wat Chai' or 'turn left just beyond the new market' and hope that the verbals get passed on). Just watch a new Thai customer signing up at a 3BB desk and being asked to draw a map. The facial expression is as close to '<deleted>?!' as you will ever see on a local.

On Topic again... print a google map and then draw and very basic copy by hand. Seems that one or the other and sometimes both will be accepted. Don't try ad give them a print of a google earth screen grab though. That will get passed around for a bit of a giggle then they bin it and ask for a hand drawn one.
