Hong Kong tourist in Phuket ICU after ‘mysterious’ swimming incident

Phuket Gazette -

PHUKET: A tourist from Hong Kong is unconscious in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bangkok Hospital Phuket (map here) after being pulled out of a swimming pool at a five-star resort in Phuket.

Manhoe Lai, 31, was swimming in a pool at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa in Mai Khao just after midday yesterday when for an unknown reason he lost consciousness, Lt Thanom Thongpan of the Tah Chat Chai Police told the Phuket Gazette.

“He was pulled out of the pool by guests who were in the water at that time. Hotel staff immediately reported the incident to police,” Lt Thanom said.

“Mr Lai was swimming while his wife was at poolside. She did not notice anything wrong until she saw him being pulled out of the water by other guests,” he added.

Mr Lai’s wife reported that her husband was not known to be suffering from any pre-existing medical condition.

“[she said] they always have a yearly physical checkup and they just did it before coming to Thailand,” Lt Thanom said.

“At this stage we have no idea what caused the incident. We hope that more information from the doctors will be able to help us in our investigation,” he added.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket staff confirmed to the Gazette this morning that Mr Lai has remained unconscious in the ICU since his arrival at the hospital yesterday.

“Right now we are working with police to collect more information relevant to the case. We will issue a statement later when we have more information,” a staffer at the JW Marriott Resort and Spa told the Gazette.

I hope that Mr. Lai gets well soon, so that he can enjoy the remainder of his years. Thailand should get him back into shape free of charge until proven that it was Mr. Lais' fault of which took place, any tourist appreciates a good medical system when considering future/return holiday destinations, especially families.

On a shorter note, I now know how to claim my life insurance, or my insurance for which I can claim after being hospitalized for more than 48 hours without diagnosis - enough trips to Thailand and something is bound to come up eventually! Hopefully I just get a bug or something, rather than some of the other gruesome things that happen, or high level falls from balconies.

I don't think the poster did.

When one answers to an earlier news message (when the man was taken into ICU) he/she doesn't know yet that the patient died, which was mentioned in a later, 2nd, news-message.

He will only learn if he/she returns to the initial first -and second- newsarticle; in this case that the unfortunate man died.

True, if people only read the earlier posts in a thread ...

Dont you mean the later posts? Or if people only read all the posts in the thread?

That might have made more sense.

Mr TheGhostWithin presumably only read the first news article-post in which it said that the patient was taken into ICU; he wasn't aware of the second news article that the patient died -later-.

Yes, so he should have read the posts that were made earlier in the thread, but some people are not interested in anybody else's comments, only in their own.

No no!

If one reacts/writes ONLY to the original news (post) that the man was delivered to hospital into ICU and that's the only reaction (I do that myself sometimes), than he will not learn that the man died according to the second news article!

And now I can say the same again, I'll highlight in bold: Yes, so he should have read the posts that were made earlier in the thread, but some people are not interested in anybody else's comments, only in their own.
