Two arrested for sex trafficking

Wisit Chuanpipatpong

The Nation

KANCHANABURI: -- A man and a woman have been arrested and charged with sex trafficking in separate cases, police told a press conference yesterday.

Boonlert Timthong, 36, the owner of a restaurant in Kanchanaburi's Muang district, was arrested in a sting operation for allegedly forcing six women from Myanmar to work as prostitutes. Anti-Human Trafficking Division police said they found four of the women, including a 17-year-old, at a karaoke bar run by the man.

Police said Boonlert confessed to buying all six women from a broker and forcing them to work as prostitutes to pay off tens of thousands of baht each.

A foundation working with the Anti-Trafficking Coordination Unit Northern Thailand (TRAFCORD) reported the alleged sex-trafficking activities at the karaoke bar to the police.

According to TRAFCORD, Boonlert forced the women to work as prostitutes, initially claiming each of the victims owed him about Bt70,000. Despite their having worked for him for two months, he later claimed that the debt had increased to Bt87,300 each.

The division also charged Prapaporn Chantakitnukul, 48, with forcing a 16-year-old schoolgirl to work as a prostitute in Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district. Police arrested Prapaporn in a sting operation after she allegedly took the girl to a hotel to work as a prostitute. Prapaporn denied the allegation.

According to the Thailand Country Report of the 2012 Trafficking in Persons Report, the government does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking. The government has not shown evidence that it is increasing efforts to address human trafficking compared with the previous year; therefore, Thailand is placed on the Tier 2 Watch List for a third consecutive year, according to the report.

Knife-wielding robber raids four convenience stores

Kanathit Srihirundej

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A man wielding a knife managed to rob four convenience stores in Bangkok early yesterday yet spent less than a minute at each place and made off with more than Bt15,000 in cash. Nobody was injured.

Police are investigating the case and believe this lone robber is the same one who raided several convenience stores on Tuesday night.

"The outfit and weapon used are similar," Metropolitan Police Division 8 commander Maj-General Rassadakorn Yingyong said yesterday.

The robber wore black jeans, a black crash helmet, a black jacket, a white facial mask and white gloves. He is said to be about 170 centimetres tall and was seen driving a black motorcycle.

"We are monitoring images captured by security cameras," Bang Mod Police Station superintendent Colonel Pornchai Kajornklin said, adding that an arrest warrant could be issued today even though the robber had not been identified.

The first robbery yesterday took place on Rama II Road at 2.50am; the second took place on the same road at 3.09am; the third was staged in Bangkok's Rat Burana district at 3.20am; and five minutes later another store in the same district was robbed.

Police believe the man knew the routes and targeted outlets well, and have learned that the motorbike he used was new.

Shooting lures officials to bomb assault

The Nation

YALA: -- A Yala villager was fatally shot on Thursday night, and then police and soldiers investigating the scene were hit with a roadside bomb.

Fortunately, no one was injured when the explosive device was detonated in Bannang Sata district's Uber village in Tambon Bacho.

About 20 soldiers, police and Interior Ministry officials rushed to the scene of the shooting at around 8.15pm. The victim was identified as Rosalee Toni, 28, a former Royal Thai Navy sailor.

The security personnel were travelling in nine vehicles. About two kilometres before they reached the scene, the roadside bomb was detonated.

Police said the insurgents also fired at the vehicles. There was an exchange of gunfire before the assailants retreated.

Yala police dispatched its bomb squad to check the scene on Friday morning. They were accompanied by the Yala police chief, Pol Maj-General Pira Boonliang. They found that the home-made five-kilogram bomb had been tied to an electric pole, which was toppled by the blast and caused a power outage in the village.

'Crowds made Children's Day arch unstable'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Crowds walking past an arch at a Children's Day celebration last Saturday at Government House made the structure unstable, causing it to fall and injure a mother and her two children, the Prime Minister's Office Secretariat concluded yesterday.

The findings were announced by Renu Tungkhajiwangkul, deputy secretary-general of the PM's Office.

Upatham Nisitsukcharoen, managing director of Right Man Co, which built the structures for the event, said too many visitors hit the arch while walking past, making it unstable and causing it to collapse.

He said his firm was sorry about the accident and would shoulder all medical expenses of the mother and her two young sons.

He said the boys had completely recovered from their injuries while the mother was still recovering but could now walk.

He added that the company had insurance to cover accidents and would seek additional compensation from the insurance firm to give to the family.
