Hi all! I've been reading up about this topic, and think I have it down, but wanted to post my situation in detail just to be sure.

  • I've got a US passport, and am 32 years old.
  • I arrived in Thailand for the 1st time by air without a visa, they stamped my passport there for 30 days.
  • I'd now like to travel outside the country (probably to Vientiane) and pick up a double entry visa.
  • Does "double entry" mean I will get 30 days, have to cross the border and come back for another 30 days?
  • What documentation do I need to bring with me to Laos?
  • What are my options for getting to Vientiane from Chiang Mai? Cheapest? Fastest? Most interesting?
  • Can I get a double entry visa in Burma instead or no?

Thanks in advance!

Each entry of a tourist visa allows 60 day stay that can be extended 30 days for 1,900 baht at immigration office. But both entries of a two entry visa would have to be made within 90 days from issue so a day or two less than 90 days for first entry/extension perhaps.

Passport/copy/copy of Laos visa/entry and photos and fee of 1,000 baht each entry.

Bus to Udon/Nong Khai from Chiang Mai or a flight to Udon are normal methods.

a double entry visa will give you two times 60 days in Thailand, you can extend each stay by another 30 days for 1,900 baht.

In that case you enter Thailand and get 60 days, after a day or 50 you go to an immirgation offcie and ask for an extension of 30 days for 1,900 baht. After 90 days in Thailand you leave Thailand, enter and leave another country and re-enter Thailand again for another 60 das (plus 30 day extension if you want).

But be carefull. You must make both entries before the visa itself expires, which is often after 3 months from the date of issue. So you might need to leave Thailand a little bit earlier in order to re-enter again before the visa has expired.

"Perfect, thanks so much. Are there early morning buses from Chiang Mai to Udon?"

Most common are the overnight buses. To Udon or Khon Kaen.

I'd guess that any daytime buses will take longer because of more stops. That might fit in your 'most interesting' category.

Just to make sure I understand this fully. You go to Laos and get visa which lets you enter thailand for 60 days, which can extend for 30 days, totaling 90 days. Before the 90 days runs out, you can exit thailand and re-enter for another 60 days and extend another 30 days. Which in total would give you 180 days?

Also I read that it's almost impossible to get a double entry visa in the countries bordering thailand, is this the case? Cause I want to go to Vientiane.

You can get a 2 entry tourist visa in Vientiane or Savannakhet Laos without a problem. All other nearby locations only give single entry visas.

The visa will only have a 90 day validity so you have to make sure you make the 2nd entry before it expires.

You have to make the second entry before the VISA itself expires, which is often 3 months from date of issue in neighbouring countries. In Europa and the US a double toruist visa will often be valid for 6 months.

You can get a double entry tourist visa in Laos, in other neighbouring countries it will be difficult.
