BANGKOK: -- The St Gabriel's Foundation is moving to dump Anant Prichavudhi as Assumption College director while continuing his two controversial projects.

"We should be able to release the announcement on Anant on Wednesday," foundation representative Bancha Saenghirun said yesterday after meeting with Charnwit Tapsuphan, acting secretary-general of the Private Education Commission, teachers and alumni.

Teachers have risen up against Anant's proposal to develop a campus on Rama II Road and |merge the primary and secondary sections and have called for his dismissal.

But Anant found himself in trouble when he responded to a planned protest from teachers by ordering the closing of all classes from January 25 -February 1.

The teachers and alumni were asked to leave the meeting room before Charnwit and Bancha discussed the teachers' demand for Anant's removal.

Bancha said Anant had denied any wrongdoing and refused to resign. Although a fact-finding committee would be established to ensure justice to all sides, the meeting agreed that Anant's role as director would end.

"We'll appoint his successor," Bancha said.

The foundation would also ensure that teachers' pay is in line with the Education Ministry's directive, he said.

Teachers had complained that Anant was not following the ministry's guidelines. The foundation operates 17 schools in Thailand. Established more than a century ago, Assumption College has long been known an elite boys' school.

Sitthichai Parinyanusor, a teacher and member of the Save the |AC Group, said his group was |quite satisfied with the meeting's results.

"But we'll still fight for our other demands," he said.

His group has not condoned the construction of the Rama II campus amid suspected irregularities.

St Gabriel's Foundation: "The institute's main concern is Christian education, especially for the poor, orphans and the physically challenged."

Assumption College was founded to educate the poor. It is now an 'elite boy's school'. Isn't that typical? Many public schools in the UK began as charity schools. Then when they became successful, the elite stole them for their own children.

In the uk they are compelled to give scholarships to keep their charitable status.
