Hi,

My Thai lady friend is interested in working in the UK.

I've had a look at the sticky topics, but was a little confused.

What would be the minimum requirement for her to work in the UK?

To be married.. and?

Sorry to bother you on this issue.

Thanks

Like most countries in the world, the UK has restrictions who can enter the country to work, those normally able to do so are have specific skills not not normally available in the country specified.

I don't know what skills your friend has, the UKBA Website will her a good starting point. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/working/

Even highly skilled workers are subject to restrictions, especially given the state of the UK Job market.

Another avenue, and this is what I think she refers to, is those that settle in the UK, they are allowed to work, and indeed might be expected to.

Thanks for the link.

Yes, I think 'settling' maybe the way to go.

Of course, as long as she didnt loose her Thai citizenship.

We are considering getting married anyway, and I am a UK resident.

So is it plausible that she could come over and 'settle' and work?

Or is it a very hard, unreliable proccess of application?

Thanks

It's not a difficult process for genuine applicants, though you really don't want to be doing it because your girlfriend fancies getting a job in the UK.

It's a fairly expensive process and takes about three months to get an answer once the application has been submitted, there are levels of proof required, including a current minimum salary of £18,600 from the sponsor, and a language test for the applicant.

There are plenty of posts on the subject on this forum, have a read and come back with any specific questions and somebody will try to advise.

She wouldn't have to give up her Thai Nationality to settle in the UK.

I thought that the sponsor had to show pay slips if working, for at least 3 months, this would mean that the OP would have to have a job and then be there alone for a while before his wife joined him, unless of course he is already there.

Please let me know if this is correct.

No Beano, if going down the employment rate I believe it's six months.

Reading the OP's post I suspect he is already in the UK.

2. In respect of salaried employment in the UK, all of the following evidence must be provided:

(a) Wage slips covering:

(i) a period of 6 months prior to the date of application if the applicant has been employed by their current employer for at least 6 months (and where paragraph 13( of this Appendix does not apply); or

okay 6 months, thanks for that.

I read the OP's other topics actually he does not seem to be working unless self-employed as he has been posting about visas for India and a Thai visa that he has, and travel for 8 months.

In which case it's a whole new ball game smile.png

Thanks for the infos.

Yes, I'm actually in Thailand at present.

I've just got here from 6 months in India.

So, I would have to get back to the UK for 6 months and work for that period before I even applied for my Ladyfriend to come over.

Does marriage make much difference at all?

(We are not currently married.)

Or its more just the sponsorship issue?

Thanks

makes no difference if married or not, as the spouse you are sponsoring your wife's application.

There are three types of settlement for a partner of the opposite sex.

  • Spouse: you are already married. Can work immediately.
  • Fiance; you will marry within 6 months of arrival in the UK. Cannot work until after the marriage.
  • Unmarried partner; you have been living together outside the UK in a relationship akin to marriage for at least the last two years. Can work immediately.

All three types, of course, need to meet the financial and other requirements.
