Laos and Thailand to have freight rail link by 2015

Vientiane - Laos' 3.5-kilometre railway link to Thailand will be able to handle freight by 2015, news reports said Monday.

Laos was to build the required facilities at its end of the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge by 2015, the Vientiane Times reported.

"Construction of a yard to store containers and lifting facilities will begin at the end of this year," said Bounchanh Xaybounheuang, a senior official at the Lao Railways Authority.

The project will be financed by a 1.65-billion-baht(55-million-dollar) loan from the Thai government.

The road and rail bridge was opened in 1994, and links Nong Khai in Thailand to Laos on the other side of the Mekong River. The railway extends another 3.5 kilometres to the Lao capital Vientiane.

The train service has so far been limited to passengers, mainly foreign tourists

Thai AirAsia projects 20% growth this year

By Digital Media

BANGKOK, Feb 4 – Thai AirAsia, Thailand’s largest low-cost air carrier, predicted a 20 per cent business growth with 10 million passengers using its service, or an 82 per cent occupancy per flight this year, a senior executive said today.

Tassapon Bijleveld, chief executive officer, forecast an overall aviation business growth of 12-15 per cent for Thailand this year thanks to uninterrupted tourism expansion in the region and the increasing trend of tourists heading for Indochina.

Thailand has been rated one of the top destinations in the region, he said, adding that the ASEAN Economic Community, scheduled to be launched in 2015, will facilitate inter-country tourism in Indochina.

The longer winter in Europe and Asian countries like Japan and Korea is a tourism boon for tropical countries in the region, he said.

Mr Tassapon said AirAsia will enhance its fleet of 34 aircraft with seven new energy-saving Airbus 380s in the near future.

Thai AirAsia will increase the number of flights on domestic routes to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hat Yai and open several new regional routes to two Chinese cities, one Indochina city and Bhutan.

Asked if the projected high-speed train services in the region will affect the low-cost airline business, Mr Tassapon said 80 per cent of travel fees for high-speed trains worldwide is higher than those charged by low-cost airlines due to high infrastructure investment costs for rail projects.

In Bangkok, both international airports – Don Meaung and Suvarnabhumi – are not far from the city centre, and that is convenient for travellers, he said. (MCOT online news)

Chalerm to introduce new measures for Deep South mid-Feb

BANGKOK, 4 February 2013 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung is ready to unveil a new set of guidelines to solve the ongoing violence in the Deep South after February 15.

Following fresh attacks on farmers in Pattani province last week, Police Captain Chalerm is scheduled to hold talks with the Committee to Mobilize Policy and Strategy to Solve Problems in the Southern Border Provinces on February 15 in a bid to devise new measures on solving the southern unrest problem. He said the measures will be announced shortly after the meeting.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who oversees national security, declined to comment on the attack, which saw two farming experts from Sing Buri and Suphan Buri shot dead and 10 others injured in the southern province.

Police Captain Chalerm is also scheduled to have a meeting with the Malaysian Interior Minister on February 21 in an effort to reassure the neighboring country that Thailand has always adhered to non-violent policies when dealing with Thai-Muslim residents.

Border districts in Chiang Mai to develop historical tourism

BANGKOK, 4 January 2013 (NNT) - Five border districts in Chiang Mai province are developing historical tourism promotion plans in preparation for the opening of the temporary checkpoint of Kiew Pha Wok in Chiang Dao district.

Mr Phairote Kunlawanit from the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Commerce said he and a team responsible for studying the feasibility of the opening of the Kiew Pha Wok checkpoint had agreed to have the five border districts create historical tourism promotion plans. The plans will be proposed to the Chiang Mai governor and the provincial border committee as the province’s strategy.

The five districts are Wiang Haeng, Chiang Dao, Mae Ai, Fang and Chai Prakan.

However, Mr Phairote pointed out that, unlike Thailand, neighboring Myanmar was not yet ready for the opening of the new temporary checkpoint since its government had not established complete control over minority groups living there. Therefore, he said Chiang Mai would in the meantime prepare itself for the checkpoint opening and promote tourism domestically.

If things go according to the plans, the districts would become tourist cities that could generate huge income for the local communities, the official added.

By English News

PHNOM PENH, Feb 4 -- Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on Monday agreed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries and jointly develop border areas.

Ms Yingluck was in Phnom Penh to attend the royal cremation of Cambodia's former king Norodom Sihanouk.

The Thai premier met Mr Hun Sen and held bilateral talks at the Cambodian Prime Minister's Office.

The two leaders hailed the good and strong relations between the two countries which has led to the progress of their bilateral cooperation in various fields, which would eventually benefit both mutually.

The Thai leader also said Thailand wanted to cooperate with Cambodia to develop the border areas for prosperity and peace.

Ms Yingluck took the opportunity to thank the Cambodian government in granting a royal pardon and prison term reduction for two Thai activists, saying that the move was considered a goodwill gesture from Cambodia.

Veera Somkwamkid, coordinator of Thailand's Patriots Network, and his secretary Ratree Pipattanapaiboon were arrested on Dec 29, 2010 by Cambodian authorities while inspecting a disputed area claimed by both countries. Both were accused of spying on Cambodia military facilities in Banteay Meanchey province.

Mr Veera received an eight year prison sentence, while his secretary was handed six years jail for espionage and illegal entry.

In accordance with the royal pardon, Ms Ratree was released last Friday (Feb 1) while Mr Veera's prison term is to be reduced by six months, leaving him to remain in jail for another five years.

Ms Yingluck also thanked Phnom Penh for taking good care of 51 Thai prisoners in Cambodia.

The Thai premier later had an audience with King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia and Queen Mother Monique Norodom Monineath to affirm the strong relations and cooperation between the two countries.

Ms Yingluck also extended the gratitude to the King of Cambodia who granted pardon and prison term reductions to the two Thai activists. (MCOT online news)
