Thai AirAsia goes for bigger market share

Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld, second from right, helps the airline mark its ninth anniversary yesterday.

Flight expansion with fleet set to reach 46 aircraft in 2015 on deliveries of new Airbus

BANGKOK: -- Thai AirAsia will focus more on the domestic market by increasing its flight frequencies on existing routes to raise its share of this market to more than 40 per cent by the end of the year from 38 per cent currently.

newsjsThe plan will be supported by delivery of seven new Airbus A320s this year. Over the next three years, its market share at home is projected to increase to more than 50 per cent, with the arrival of six new A320s each year until 2015, said Tassapon Bijleveld, the company's chief executive officer.

In 2015, its fleet will comprise about 46 aircraft, up from 34 by the end of this year.

Yesterday, it held a blessing ceremony to welcome the 28th A320 into its fleet. The aircraft's special characteristic is its "sharklet" wingtip, which Airbus claims allows a fuel saving of 3 per cent compared with its rivals.

Currently, Thai AirAsia operates 174 flights a day to 30 destinations from Don Mueang International Airport, 12 domestic and 18 international. Domestically, its key markets include Phuket, Hat Yai, Krabi and Chiang Mai. The carrier will also increase its frequencies on existing regional routes to China and Indochina.

It projects carrying 10 million passengers, up from 8.3 million last year. Its cabin factor is projected at 82 per cent, the same as in 2012.

Tassapon said the company would add only four new destinations to its network this year. They will be two cities in China, one in Indochina, and one in Bhutan or Nepal.

Last year, nine new destinations were introduced both at home and regionally, including Wuhan, Chongqing and Xi'an in China. The airline enjoys an 82-per-cent combined cabin factor in those three cities.

Yesterday marked the ninth anniversary of Thai AirAsia. It was launched in 2004, with its first flight from Bangkok to Hat Yai. Its business has grown annually. In 2011, revenue was Bt16 billion.

Tassapon declined to disclose its financial-performance projection for this year, but noted that the previous plan filed with the Stock Exchange of Thailand was to grow by 20 per cent annually.

The strengthening baht has not benefited the company, especially its fuel bill. It will have a closer look at the situation, but believes it is only short-term. He believes the suitable rate is slightly more than Bt30 to the US dollar. Currently, the company generates its sales in different foreign currencies such as the rupiah, the dong and the Hong Kong dollar. Baht revenue makes up 50 per cent of the total.

He said the business outlook this year was still good because politics is stable. Only fuel cost is a risk. The company's boost comes from a growing number of foreign arrivals, thanks to the country's strategic location as a connecting place to other cities in the region. Chinese in particular come to Bangkok before flying to other cities to explore.

How much to come home? Are you allowed to take luggage. Are there flights guaranteed. I have had to wait several times for the next flight as they did not have enough customers to make it economically feasible so they just canceled the flight.sad.png

Scoot is getting the first 20 B787's delivered to SQ. Will give AirAsiaX a run for their money. They are V expensive now compared to Scoot and even Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines is cheaper at the moment.

They should not have too many problems achieving their goal.

Thai Smile prices are ridiculous.

I'll be amazed if they do go to Bhutan -- a very limited market designed for upscale travellers -- but Nepal would be a very good idea. Getting there currently is very expensive for the distance involved.

I find your post very hard to believe, but interesting. Can you tempt me with a route and date where these airlines are cheaper.

AA has some great deals that pop up regularly. I recently grabbed sale fares Had Yai - KL for $30 and KL-Gold Coast for $131. Anybody heading to Yangon or Saigon between May and August should check their site NOW!

Still dosen't say how much to come home. Or maybe I am wrong and he is not returning.

All the more reason for High Speed Trains.

They cancelled me once on a return trip from Krabi to BKK and I was never refunded after having to take the bus back. The seating is atrocious - made for Asians and not farang with little leg room - and they sting you for every kilo over as well as inflight service items. The airport ticket counters are at best average so I would rather pay the extra, and load from an air bridge than be hustled into a bus. Budget carriers can work but it is not that much cheaper by the tie you add it all back in and the inconvenience.

At least Scoot has something that resembles a regional business class; if Thai Air Asia offered something similar I might be tempted trying them again. 29" pitch is hell!

Last year Air Asia flew me from Bali tot Bangkok for 20 dollars. Surely not a lot of room for my tall Dutch legs but i was laughing hard. ;) In Asia I always fly with Air Asia. Never had any problems. Their service is straightforward. And you simply get what you pay for.

Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa....this was to Colombo, not Yangon....sorry guys for the confusion.....but kindly understand that we ARE HIGHLY FRUSTRATED by this hanging to dry caused by AAsick.gif They give us a refund but what about all the hotel reservations.....loss of face, loss of (some) funds....

How involved in the Thai domestic air routes are any of those airlines?

For price Air Asia has many good deals. But when you figure it all in some of them are not that good. For myself I really don't like airports and flying. If possible I will pay the extra bucks. For instance going to Pattaya at the end of the month. I am paying about 1,200 more baht than Air Asia. I am flying with Bangkok air and I will have a lounge to sit in while I wait for my flight as well as the knowledge that my price is an all in price 20 kilo luggage meals. At my extended old age I think less about saving for the future and more about conveniences.

The Last time I flew with Air Asia was into swampy and I was in need of a wheelchair some thing I had appraised them of when buying the ticket. When I landed I was told it would be a half hour wait for one.

Was in the exact same situation last month.

Got SMS cancelling our Bangkok-Colombo round-trip. So gave them a call and, at zero additional cost, they gave us tickets to fly Bangkok-KL-Colombo round trip. They also included our pre-paid luggage on the additional flights for free.

Had a great time. Thanks a bunch, Tony Fernades.

Look forward to your next grand sale.

The free fare tickets we picked up at the last one will give us round-trips to BKK-Phuket and BKK-Udon Thani later this year at, uhmmm... really hard to beat prices.

AA are the best to happen to air travel since the Wright bros.

Problem there was no seats on their flights..

More A320's? Yeah, I understand why, but can't they purchase some smaller aircraft so they can offer services to smaller cities? You cant fly an A320 with 25 people on board and make money (unless you charge everyone 30k baht), but you could fly a smaller craft and offer service to previously unprofitable places. I'm no business person though.

Has anybody stayed at Air Asia's new hotels? They look interesting, but slightly overpriced. I guess you're paying for the new-ness.

Slightly overpriced? I did five nights at the Tune hotel in Penang last year for 5.85 ringgit total (~60 baht) followed by the same deal at the Tune hotel in Johor Bahru. Even figuring in money for air-conditioning, that worked out to about 120 baht per night.

That said, Tune Hotels are much like AirAsia. Book early, get a great deal. Walk-in rates are not so great.

For about the same price you can get five fresh daily copies of The New Straits Times newspaper and sleep on it in Fort Cornwallis park at night.

I've never heard of this place in Thailand.

Right. But on this Thai themed website, in this Thailand News sub-forum, ovenman was talking about some place completely different.

From my research on the Bangkok and Pattaya locations of Tune hotel, they seemed a bit overpriced for the amenities included.

Anyways, I like AirAsia and wish them the best.

Yeah, ya gotta watch him. Sometimes he wanders off into irrelevant connections like that. I think its old age with him.

But, I bet he's also stayed in some of those Thailand properties, as well, so we can wait for his reply on experiences in any of those locations.
