Chula move will close Pathumwan School

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Chulalongkorn University's plans to widen a roadway and construct a park will mean the closure of Pathumwan School.

University president Pirom Kamolratanakul said yesterday CU officials would talk to parents about minimising the impact of the school's closure on students.

newsjs

"We plan to expand the road surface and develop a green area along the road," Pirom explained, adding that it would become a public park. The move is in accordance with the university's long-term land-use plan, he said.

Pathumwan School, along Rama IV Road, is operated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), offering classes from Pathom 1 to 6.

Pirom the university has not offered a new site for the school because it believed the BMA would take care of the issue. He said his university had informed the Pathumwan School about the plan to reclaim the plot of land since 2011.

BURNING ISSUE

More provinces should have right to elect own governors

Pravit Rojanaphruk

BANGKOK: -- As much as Bangkok residents may relish the right to decide which Bangkok governor candidate to vote for early next month, the race has become a glaring reminder of inequality on at least two fronts. First, the absolute lack of a level playing field for most candidates and second, Bangkok's sense of exceptionalism - to elect its own governor unlike the rest of the country, which is now taken for granted.

Hail-hit Lamphun districts declared disaster zones

The Nation

30199433-01_big.jpg

Lamphun officials were dispatched yesterday to aid residents affected by Sunday's hailstorm.

LAMPHUN: -- Lamphun deputy governor Navin Sintusa-ard said the tangerine-sized hailstones punctured roofs and ruined farm crops in Pa Sang, Muang, Ban Thi and Mae Tha districts, which would be declared disaster zones. Mae Tha was the hardest hit, with 7,717 residents in 2,332 households affected.

At least 100,000 roof tiles are needed to repair the damage. Cleanup is expected to take about a week because the supply of roof tiles is limited.
