Parliament nods to ASEAN agreement frameworks

BANGKOK, 5 February 2013 (NNT) - The joint sitting of parliament on Tuesday unanimously approved two frameworks of ASEAN cooperation while the members of parliament requested the government to prepare measures against non-tariff trade barriers.

The majority of the members of parliament agreed to give the green light to the two ASEAN frameworks as they saw that the government needed to prepare for the entry into force of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. They also suggested the government to urgently implement measures to handle non-tariff barriers against Thai products and to make sure that incoming ASEAN products meet the standards, especially agricultural produce that will be imported more after the AEC takes effect.

In addition, the members of parliament called for serious action on products and intellectual properties that might violate the intellectual property rights. At the same time, they insisted that the government should create a list of Thai intellectual properties and have them registered beforehand.
