Sorry for the ignorance, But how do you stop the ducks from flying/buggering off when you let them out to freerange?

I think having some ducks around a pha nin pond as been adventitious. duck poo in water, water go green equals happy fat pha nin.

Not only that, but fresh duck eggs and meat would be awesome.

As Shaggy says, if they are happy they will not bugger off.

Give them a pond & food (or access to free range food) & they will stay.

If they have a pond they can escape dogs, but if there are dogs around they will not venture away from the pond to feed.

All Duck eggs are good to eat, but some produce more eggs than others.

Thats probably a Khaki Campbell, which produces lots of eggs.

For a pet you would be better off with Muscovy type.

Theyre big, usualy a mixture of black & white colours with red skin on the face.

Very friendly, they dont need a pond & produce a batch of 10-15 eggs every few months.

I've heard this type is more available on the mainland, Surrathannii.... so will try to get my landlord to pickup some ducklings next time he's over with the truck... I showed him a pic last night and seemed to know where to get!

The kid has got Muscovy ducks already, just this type I pictured is what he wants too, .... These would be for selling eggs, not pets!!! so perhaps the meaning of he was trying to say, he wants is the extra eggs with less effort !!!!

Just back from a few days in the Ranot area of Songkhla..... thousands upon thousands of this duck.... !

My friends there, and I tried to find some baby ducks but no body had! We visited several farms to no avail, so I brought 15 eggs....(we were assured they were viable....) They survived the trip back to Samui today, and now sitting under a white and black duck....

I gather that process takes a month... So sure hope it was worth the effort... and they are not too confused if they are born!

Does anyone know where I can get some Pekin ducks in the Chiang Mai area?

I have be searching for ages, and can not find any. Even the big farmers market did not have any....only some breed of brown duck and muscovy ducks.

If you need to stop them flying depending on which breed you have, just trim their main flight feathers, doesn't hurt them but it does keep them grounded, remember if you have Muscoveys, they will fly cause they are used to perching in trees, also Khaki Cambells if left to wander and develop their wing muscles will also be able to fly, but not as far lol. I have had both types and also Cayuga ducks, which are a lovely coloured duck and excellent to have around the garden.

Trimming their wings work, but I only trim one side. It is just a preference and a little funny to see them start to flap and instantly start going over on their side. If you trim both it should work well with heavy ducks, but light birds can eventually fly like pigeons. I have not had much problem with Khaki Campells or Pekins, but a Muscovy will fly for the heck of it sometimes.

i got them just out side wangnamyen,,,

no there not all one sex, i asked for 2 male and 7 females,

some are a little young to tell yet, but if ive got to many of whatever ill either kill them down or go and buy some more,,lol

they are good value i thought at 1000bht for the 9 of them,,

That is a great price, especially if you end up with such a good ratio. Wangnamyen is way too far for me to go so let me know when you get into egg production. I'd like to get some from you. I was hoping to get some Cherry valley ducks from a guy not far from my house, but I won't know for a while.

Always a lot of ducks in Chatachuk market on the weekends, lots of normal egg layer and Muscovies. Also Mallards, call ducks and more "specialist" ducks if people like different types and colours, finally on one stall there is a "Thai Superduck" which to me is a cross between a Teal and a Campbell. Don't quack but make a warbling sound, very pretty colours but more importantly lay very big eggs. Incredibly fast too! For info I have at the moment Cambells, Cayugas, Appleyards, Swedish Blue, Magpies, Peking and Abacot Ranger. Would like some good Mallards next, currently incubating eggs from Cayugas, Swedish and Appleyards.
