Baerboxer
British police have been doing it for years and years, many cases of corruption in the british police force, even sending people to jail for offences not committed. Most countries have corrupt cops, many far more dangerous than the greedy thai cops There were several issues on various British police forces, particularly the MET (flying squad, robbery squad etc) and a big scandal with the West Midlands regional crime squad. However, the % of bent officers was low and the corruption has been rooted out. Police found guilty of committing a crime will be punished usually with imprisonment. The Thai police have a very high % of corrupt officers - from top to bottom. Police found guilty of serious crimes, including murder, people trafficing etc will be ................. given bail, let off, maybe moved to an inactive post and loose out on tea money for a while. See the difference. I started coming to Asia on long business trips over 25 years ago and remember often thinking how lucky we were to have a professional, mostly, police force in the UK and excellent honest judiciary. Thailand has got worse over the years not better. Certainly not the worst when compared to Africa, Latin America or even the Philipinnes - but still one of the problems stopping Thailand devloping from a third world country and fulfilling its massive potential. kevvy
I am building a village of 38 houses which I have sold 8 and the rest is in various building stages , (i have posted a report on the village before) and I am amazed how many police come each month to check the workers , and if they are not Thai they don t take them to the immigration they want money from the construction company . This happens on most construction sites. How much corruption is there in this country , god only knows

warfie
While I'm sure to many this is merely confirmation of something that was long suspected. Although that it could go right to the top of the system is maybe more of a surprise? So does anyone here think it could have spread to the judiciary? For example, I've often wondered what chances a foreign businessman has here of taking on a Thai in the civil courts and receiving a fair and balanced result? After all, judges don't get paid very much here, unlike in the West? I can tell you from bitter experience that despite the evidence, the Thai won. THEN I was ordered to pay the other parties legal costs... NOT BL00DY LIKELY! You do realize the judges get the majority of their income from lawyers & associates don't you? I got introduced to a lawyer that had never lost a case .... but he was very expensive ... I wonder why? Sounds like your lawyer got outbid. Pretty much my assumption too. However, he said, "My boss in fact receives more money than me and other [officers]. The money I collected is for the boss - we got a very small sum." Both police, however, left the shop. jaapfries
Finally Porn told them that Banjong was a journalist. Banjong then wai-ed the officers and asked them if they were aware that their boss, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, had recently issued an order prohibiting police from accepting money for the Chinese New Year I'm always confused by the wai. A mark of respect, something you do to someone older or more important? Certainly not something you would do to two corrupt police? No collecting money on Chinese New Year? How about no collecting money on any day of the year. I don't know how long YOU have been in this country; but these coppers (corrupt as they may be) DO carry guns and it would not be the first time that someone (in this case the intrepid reporter) was shot & killed in the process of Police pursuing a suspected criminal, who then started to attack the 'officers" who then had no other way to defend their own lives, but to shoot & kill . . . . . . . I'll tell you another thing for free: I would not like to be in that reporter's position, right now ! ! !

siampolee
The Prime Minister took an oath against corruption and stressed that her government placed great important on promoting good morals and transparency among all officials. She also said she would like to see the culture of honesty manifest in the Thai society. That event was at the closing down sale of '' Democracy in Thailand, '' and the grand opening of the '' Shinawatra Puppet Show. EyesWideOpen
Clearly when a perspective policeman forks over his million baht to enter the force, it appears IQ is not a determinant factor. Extort money in front of a CCTV with a reporter standing there, and then dob out your boss ?? Wow......... I can see the horrific punishment of being forced to step back from the feeding trough for a while. Yes, the famous INACTIVE POST !!!!!!! The most dreaded punishment handed out by ranking policemen who are angry the bozo police at the bottom get caught and make everyone look bad for a while. No problem, next week there will be a new story of police gone bad. They truly are the blight of Thailand. Wonder what it would take to actually reform them. I have heard the reform talk for many years here, and yet it seems to get worse. Or more are getting caught due to electronic devices .....
