Really impressed, guys. I'm an amateur myself, bought my first camera not too long ago. Here's a few from today, just studies in line, composition, and figure/ground. Harsh criticism welcomed!

Really like 1 and 4, well done! A few comments, I would have liked to see 1 and 3 captured in landscape format as the upper areas of the image lend nothing to the interest of the subject. Perhaps image 4 would have been better in portrait format since the doorway would act as a natural frame and scale and you would have avoided chopping off her legs. Also, you might consider a slight vignette in 4 to keep the viewers eyes in the frame as the sides are quite light and tend to take the eye out of the frame.

Hope to see more from you soon!

Welcome,

Stix

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Here's three from yesterday, figure/ground and line studies.

I don't like these as much as Saturday's shots, but I can't answer why. I don't yet understand why I prefer one photo over another. Any thoughts as to what makes one photo "better" than another?

They all tell a different "story" for want of a better word.... thumbsup.gif I think the composition is great on all of them, especially the young man, seemingly picking his toenails! tongue.png

Keep them coming! thumbsup.gif

Hey jasons, this topic may be of interest to you.

Street photography tips

Thanks for the link. I actually read through that before I went out the first time. Some great stuff in there. My favorite being: "Don't think that any random picture of people in the street taken fairly up close and rendered in B&W [is necessarily worth taking]"

But so far, the best thing I've read is this link about FARTing: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/fart.htm

Basically, asking myself "why" I think something would make a good photo. Is it just the subject? Something about the composition?

From there, I then try and ask myself if there is anything I can do to make it better. Whatever I like about it, how can emphasize that? I really enjoy street photography because it forces you to do this quickly. See something beautiful; why is it beautiful; how can I make it better; snap. It all happens so fast :D

Here's a few from Wednesday. I was trying to understand the concept of decisive moments, but still have a long ways to go.

Still smoking in Phetchabun..^

Do you shoot that wide in the camera? Or did you crop the top and bottom?

Hi, jasons. I shoot everything wide in the camera. BUT the camera records everything 5x7(the standard format from the 20th century, I believe) nevertheless. BUT when I review the pics they appear wide immediatly. It saves one step in the work-flow..

[edit]Glad you caught on the smoking theme. Let me try again:

The smoke fluke/The Harvey(From a brilliant scene from reservoir dogs) It's the moment you lit the fag but it didn't burn but you notice too late and re-light it covertly in the hope nobody saw that clumsy moment....
