BANGKOK: -- The 12-year-old Karen girl who suffered extreme abuse at the hands of a Thai couple for five years in Kamphaeng Phet was yesterday taken to Bangkok's Ramathibodi Hospital, where she will be admitted for surgery in a week.

newsjs

The girl, accompanied by PM's Office spokesman Tossaporn Serirak, met with hospital director Dr Surasak Ripileela-udom and cosmetic surgeon Dr Athi Kreuwit for an evaluation. Tossaporn said the government and the hospital would cover the girl's medical bills until she made a full recovery.

Athi said the examination found scarring all over the girl's body. She is unable to raise her left arm because the burnt tissue ended up sticking her armpit to her chest, so she will undergo a four-hour operation to treat the problem, after which she will rest at the hospital for another one or two weeks. Doctors will monitor her treatment over the long term until she makes a full recovery. Athi said the girl had also suffered severe mental trauma, so mental health experts would join the treatment to help her recover.

The girl was kidnapped by Nathee Taeng-on, 35, and wife Rattanakorn Piyaworatham, 33, and forced to tend to animals at the couple's pet shop. She was tortured in various ways, including having boiling water poured onto her body. As police continued to hunt for the couple, who jumped bail, Provincial Police Region 6 chief Wanchai Thanadkij said an investigation had found that the couple had fled Kamphaeng Phet but were still in Thailand. He said police should be able to arrest them in two or three days.

If justice is to be seen to be done, these two bail jumpers should be publicly flogged. Let's hope the re-arrest is as predicted - within 2-3 days. The sympathy towards the victim is I would think, nation wide. I wonder if a charity of any sort has been set up to assist her and her future? Any details, I would like to hear as I would be happy to donate to assist her future.

I watched an article on Thai TV news showing the injuries to this very unfortunate girl.. alas I think no amount of surgery or counselling will ever help this girl.. she will be mentally traumatised for the rest of her life, & reminded of her wounds each time she looks in the mirror.. I can only hope in the future she can find the comfort of a good man & possibly husband to have some semblance of a normal life.

I've seen burn injuries at very close quarters & this is simply appalling.. the pain & suffering she must have experienced must have been horrific !

What in the name of God or Buddha made the couple inflict injuries like this to an innocent young girl I will never understand.

Also why in the name of god or Buddha were they given bail, of course they would run..??

Every man & women in Thailand should hunt this pair down, I hope the authorities see sense this time & keep them locked up until prosecuted to the full extent of the law, which unfortunately is not enough to repay them for what they have done..

How could they give bail to people like this, hand them over to their parents and family and close the book.

Best wishes and prayers for the girl. Can't even come close to imagining the hell she must have been in all those years.

Have seen many of these cases, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, happens everywhere when people can afford themselves a maid and think they own the person like some animal. Very sad indeed...

Well said Sir, my thoughts exactly - stories like this really sadden me, It is difficult to believe anyone could do these sort of things to another human far less a defenseless child. I hope the saying an "eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth" comes true in this case when they catch these bastards

I am among many that have lost sleep following this story.

I highly recommend a movie called "the evil men do" circa 1984, charles bronson. story about a deranged doctor that tortured and disfigured hundreds. Bronson comes out of retirement to do this for free.

In the end his victims end up killing him. can download it

They were given bail because they were Thai and the unfortunate girl was not. It is all about who you are in Thailand and how much you have when it comes to dealing with the Thai justice system.

If I was living in Thailand, with a nice little retirement package, I would definitely put my hand up and adopt this poor girl and make sure she had the most comfortable life anyone could have.

Just breaks my heart.

Provincial Police Region 6 chief Wanchai Thanadkij said an investigation

had found that the couple had fled Kamphaeng Phet but were still in

Thailand. He said police should be able to arrest them in two or three

days.

Since this horrific story surfaced over 2 weeks ago in the Pattaya Mail, we have read that somebody posted 700,000 baht and the child torturers were immediately released. Since then, a police spokesperson said they had gone to Cambodia and were being tracked [ no information on how or by whom]. Then a different police spokesperson said they were under the protection of an influential figure and in Thailand. Days and days pass, and the Thai press appears to be under some kind of gag order regarding this story, because it has since disappeared, with no follow ups on the 'hunt' for the child torturers and very little else, other than how well the child is doing now under the care of blah blah

Apparently, we are not allowed to learn the identity of the person who signed the release order, or the official justification for the immediate release of serial child torturers. We are not allowed to know who the police officer was that sent the child back to the torturers after her first escape 2 years ago, or why he would do such a terrible thing. We are not supposed to question why police say they are in Cambodia and they aren't in Cambodia simultaneously.. We are not allowed to question why a roomful of men was allowed to ogle, poke and photograph the poor kid in nothing but a pair of shorts. I have not seen the words 'post traumatic stress' mentioned in any article related to the child's 5 years in hell. I have to wonder if there is the slightest inkling in the minds of the experts under whose care the poor damaged kid now resides, of the long term damage that has been done to her by the monsters who were so carelessly freed.

Dare I conclude that it has already been decided that the arrest of this couple will not be allowed to tarnish the shiny golden image that official Thailand presents to its audience? The trial would certainly be an image buster and after all, image is....... all there is.

I really do hope I'm wrong.

As I have said before, this story will do the gentle Thai style fade

away. Sadly the very last thing Thailand wants is a public trial of

these monsters, and a further loss of face for the country. I personally

would love to see Myanmar jump into the fray, and declare that natural gas

will be cut off to Thailand unless these monsters are brought to trial

for seriously injuring a Myanmar citizen.....

Am curious what the response of Thailand would have been if a young

Thai girl had been tortured in the same way by a Myanmar couple. I

suspect we would be seeing the same thunderous silence we are seeing now

from the Thai government.....

It has already been said, she was only Karen so it doesn't really matter who tortured her, what was done to her and when it was done, it's completely irrelevant and it should be allowed to slowly fade away until its forgotten and all is forgiven. The maybe just maybe, on dark night one or both will hopefully run into a relative of the girl who will do what should have been done a few weeks back.

The monsters who did this are still free and not a word from anyone, authorities or media, on what is happening.

Thailand has not asked Interpol for help - the couple do not appear on Thailand's wanted list - so if they have escaped to Cambodia or elsewhere, how the hell are the Thai authorities going to get these people back to answer for what they did?

In what dream world do you live, push the editors or pressurise the police - come on now, do you really think you are talking to intelligent investigative journalists?

The only thing you came be assured of is that it will fade away, unless of course they give themselves up and that is never going to happen or if someone catches up with them and puts a sudden stop to their flight from justice.
